  • LED vs LCD

So I'm going to buy a 42 inch TV and I've decided on LCD vs LED. I don't want to get a plasma due to increased power usage and other issues. Is LED worth the extra cost? Anything else of interest I should know in purchasing? I've done a lot of reading but I haven't come to a conclusion yet.

Also, it needs to act as a monitor as well. I'm looking forward to sitting in my reclining chair with tons of room to work with.

LED are superior to LCD in every way, definitely get a LED over a LCD. Also make sure that the LED TV is a full back lit as opposed to just a side lit.

Side lit is standard, with the lights positioned around the screen. Back lit has the LEDS (couldn't do this with stand lights) positioned directly behind the screen, along with the ability to dim or shut down LEDs as needed to produce blacker blacks.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

What about LSD? I'd invest in LSD instead.

The so called LEDs are LCDs with LED backlight wile traditional LCDs use CCFL backlight.

There is no clear rule that LED is better than CCFL as far as picture quality is concerned. There are plenty of examples of very poor LED models (including back lit models with local dimming). Even within the same manufacturer it is difficult to make the distinction that one is alway better than the other.

The only indisputable advantage of LEDs is energy consumption.

You should base your decision on individual reviews.
