Why is it so hard to be a part-time bank teller (or to get any job)?

What is there to get "sorted out"?

The concept of the teller baffles me. The one time I had to deal with a teller in my life was when I went with my dad to his bank to cash in some RESP savings bond. The teller had no ****ing idea what to do. It was a 30 minute ordeal where the teller had to call around to find out the procedure. Useless.

Things I do with my bank that requires no teller:
      1) Get paid
      2) Transfer money to/from savings account
      3) Invest in mutual funds/index funds
      4) Obtain a mortgage
      5) Get certified cheque
      6) Get new bank card
      7) Paying bills
      8) Exchanging US/CDN currency
      9) Withdrawing money in small or large denominations

      • I just use tellers when I'm changing large amounts coins or withdrawing cash greater than my daily atm limit. For cashing checks on the spot, l also like tellers because all of the tellers recognize me so I don't have to pull out any identification. Sometimes it's just that personalized touch that can make you feel important in a world where you don't get that much.

        • I also don't like depositing cash or a check except through a teller. Yes, depositing through an ATM probably has an infinitesimal failure rate and it's probably less than human error, but I like to put a face to the entity that takes my money and deposits it; if something goes wrong, I know who made the mistake.

          • If I'm depositing a check, an ATM is the preferred method. I don't think I've every deposited cash.

Considering your age, I find that very hard to believe; you were probably depositing at least some cash back in the 70's.

You're too young to be oldschool. The only rational explanation is you are...special.

                  • Now that I think back, I probably did back when I was young and was paid in cash, but I'm pretty sure I haven't in the last 30 years.

                      • I probably deposit ANYTHING once every three years or so.

I transfer money between family/friends electronically...

I hope this is a photoshop. If it's not, not cool. Even Alby doesn't deserve that. Ben, yes. Alby, no.

I remember this idea from the early 90's. Automated pilot technology for flights had advanced to such an extent that it was actually better than a real pilot, as they found that most plane crashes were caused by human error. So the Russians designed a plane that didn't have a pilot. It was the rational thing to do: Sure, computers make mistakes too, and can't handle non-programmed situations. But on average, flying in a fully automated plane would be safer. Flights would get cheaper too - no pilots required. The Americans didn't have enough faith in technology to go ahead with designing such planes.

The idea never got off the ground. Russian passengers refused to board the test planes. They wanted flesh and blood behind a yoke.

You forget that behind each of those instances there are still human operators that control and guide those processes. How do you think your bank card ends up in an envelope, and then enters your mail box? Who manages payments at your firm? Human beings - kicking ass since 4000BC.
