A large part of the reason for the massively high unemployment in Spain, at present, is actually based on the failing real estate industry. Too many houses were built, and they're going at massive discounts now.
For example, I bought the house I live in now 2 years ago for about 180k. It's 95 m2 with two bedrooms, and a living with a cooking isle in a corner. I share a swimming pool, sauna, football/tennis/basketball court, garden, and fitness room with 15 neighbours who live in identical houses in this tiny gated community.
The real estate agent could not sell 5 of the properties. Right now they're offering them for 125k, that's how desperate they are to get rid of them.
The workforce that used to be building homes will have to 're-skill', or continue waiting until the economy catches up sufficiently for good quantities of new houses to be built.
