You don't have to be near the border to have lots of Mexican immigrants. You can't drive downtown without passing a couple dozen hangouts for day laborers around here. If I believed in god I'd say god bless them. They're as American as anyone else, they came here looking for a better life and they work their butts off trying to get it.If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

Why the hell else would they leave everything they have behind and move to another country where they don't even speak the language and face discrimination?
Answer: Because despite all that, they know that if they work hard they can make it in the US. And so they work hard, and their kids go to college. If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

First of all, I wasn't trying to imply that you only have "made it" in the US if your kids go to college. That's false, and not everyone should go to college. I don't think even half of high school graduates should go to college. It's not useful for everyone.
Second, if you think these people are poor after they move here you are wrong. We might consider them poor, but our standards are absurdly high compared to most of the world, especially the parts of the world most immigrants come from. By moving here and working hard, they can vastly improve their standard of living. They aren't likely to become Rockefellers but to them this is still the land of opportunity. If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?
