    • More nice looks, but not a fan of those faucets - I prefer taller. I must have missed that you planned carpet for the great room earlier in the thread - I expected hardwood on the entire first floor - would make a great area to have a large fantastic area rug.

      • I find hardwood to be utilitarian -- great for hallways or kitchens, but I find it to be too hard and cold for a room intended for relaxation. I don't see the use of the area rugs -- they aren't very comfortable to walk on, they just let you cover up the (expensive) hardwood in such a way that it fades inconsistently over time.

And taller faucets in the bathroom? I don't think I've seen many (any?) houses with tall faucets in the bathroom.

        • Your great room doesn't really look like a room.

            • Personal preference on the faucets, certainly. Quality on area rugs varies widely - I couldn't tell you what makes ours so nice and smooth and soft feeling, but I love them. And when you get bored with one, it's a snap to replace and totally change the feeling of the room, without calling in help.

Additionally, I think you'll find that your "open concept" suffers due to the flooring division - you won't straddle that border with furniture or use. The flow is broken there, IMO.

This is all just nitpicking though - place looks grand.

              • I think there's still supposed to be some soft divisions in areas for open concept -- it's not like a big warehouse. Notice how there's little wall stubs that divide the kitchen from the nook, and great room from the nook as well. The openness is just supposed to make it more...well, open. Not necessarily a large room. I can watch the TV while cooking in the kitchen or eating at the table, or when people come over we can sorta hang out in all of the areas at once. I don't see the flooring getting in the way there.

The show home (which is the same model as ours) did have hardwood along the main floor completely. Just didn't do it for me (or my SO). They had some really expensive fur-like area rug on it also, which was nice to walk on but it reminded me a bit of a 70s shag pad...

It is just personal preference, of course. We just don't like hardwood in the relaxation-themed areas as it's somewhat harsh, and we're both pretty practical people so the thought of covering up expensive hardwood with area rugs kinda irks us. Knowing that the wood is fading inconsistently (which will happen given how sunny that area is) would also drive me a bit nuts.
