          • The good thing about brick is that it has high thermal mass.

It accumulates heat or cold slowly and releases it over time thus averaging daytiime and nighttime extremes in temperature.

Also in our climate we have multiple days in winter where there are freezing unfreezing cycles which messes the wood very fast. Also we don't have much quality wooden material to begin with.

The most popular construction method here now is with 25 cm brick and 5 cm polystyrene outside the resulting R value is lower than what Asher has but is quite good for our temperatures (average winter temperature is ~0 C) And you can always double (almost) the R value by doubling the thickness of the polystyrene sheet. This is quite a cheap upgrade but nobody does it because the building code requirements are met by using only 5cm polystyrene sheet for insulation.

            • That's why I would build a house out of aerated concrete. It has R-3.90, and with walls 40cm thick it amounts to R-62.4 even without additional thermoinsulation.

              • It wasn't required but on our cabin we went for the styrene sheeting on our foundation. So between us and the elements is gyprock, styrene, concrete, some sort of "thermal wrap" (not quite sure what it was but it looked like a big blue tarp ) and lastly a layer of stucco-- We will see this winter how effective that is. Upstairs is gyprock, fibreglass pink and plywood and gypsum .. . with exterior vinyl siding (so probably similar to ashers )with loose stuff in the attaic

Week 8.5: This is the upstairs bonus room. A fireplace is going in the cantilever in the center, and the entire room is vaulted (which is somewhat apparent in the framing). Where I'm standing is also part of the bonus room. In the official floor plans, it was a 4th bedroom. I've deleted the wall to expand the bonus room area, so it's very open in feel.

                  • Is that your front door next to the garage?
If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

                    • Yup. You do what you can with narrower lots.

99% of the houses have the same config in the neighbourhood.

The two cantilevers on the side of the house with the front door are the two fireplaces.

                      • I wasn't criticizing, Asher. Your house looks like a nice place.

It just seemed unusual to me. Garages are usually further off to the side.

                        Gas or wood fireplaces?

They're premium gas fireplaces. 100% glass face with adjustable flame. This is Alberta -- we're swimming in natural gas. (Gas stove, gas water heater, gas furnace, two gas fireplaces, gas firepit...love the gas)

Considered making one of them a wood one (on the main floor), but it costs $20,000 to do. My parents' house has a wood fireplace, which has its own charms and I love the crackle of the logs, but I don't use it nearly as much as I'd like to because of the effort involved. Also, the cost.

                          • This is the fireplace from the showhome. Ours will be the exact same, except instead of the flat white mantle's lower half (the simple rectangle), our stone goes all the way up.

                              • Yes, older homes have that. My parents' does as well.

The modern gas ones look pretty good:

Electronic ignition too (no pilot light).
