My house has pine framing with vinyl siding. It's by far the most popular configuration out here, because lumber is cheap and plentiful and masonry not so much.

I agree with BlackCat though, prices of land seem excessive.

I always thought prices on the Croatian coast were too high, but
given that Croatia is a paradise on earth compared to Calgary (no
offense meant and not trolling - it just is) they're actually too low.
High for my income, but not high absolutely.

BTW I'd have gone poured concrete all the way. It's what we do
here... using wood in construction would get you called gay

Supply and demand. I've a feeling Croatia has less demand than one of the top cities in Canada. Not to mention strength of economy impacting prices.

I believe cement is actually not that desirable in Canada for framing, because it's harder to work a lot of insulation in it properly. It's only used where it's required (highrises).

Is anyone building by themselves or is all work in your neighbourhood done
by companies?

All by companies. The developer (a company) sells the lots to various builders (companies), which then sell to people.

Progress looks fast.

Does the community have a center? A central square with
a school or some municipal buildings or something?

[Asher]

There will be a public elementary school in a couple years, a Jr High is scheduled by 2020. There's several playground areas and greenspace areas, there's a public pond, and there's a large environmental reserve (read: unmaintained natural land) accessible via pathways. There's also a sports field complex with soccer fields, a couple baseball diamonds, and in the winter an outdoor skating rink (with boards and lights).

There's also several commercial complexes going up in the area. There's one called the "Sage Hill Farm" which looks like it may be a bit corny, but different...it's a farm-themed complex. There's a giant fake barn that's actually a grocery store, a big old-school "BANK" building that houses a large bank, etc.
