The Difference between the United Kingdom, Great Britain and England
I'm not positive that the succession rules are subject to the unanimous provision of the Constitution. I am wondering if they are and have been too lazy to do further reading yet.
Abolishing the monarchy certainly would be.

It would seem to be a significant enough change to be difficult to pull off (7 in 10 or 100%).

but...while you're there, you might as well tell me about whether canadians would consider ditching the monarchy. my understanding is that a majority support the current arrangements, no?
I'm pretty sure any proposal that would abolish the monarchy would fail to gain a majority in support.
More people would say, 'yeah maybe we should' than would actually agree to the alternative. I'm thinking it would be something like modifications to FPTP. A majority of people in BC were in favour of looking at it (I think) and then when given the alternative plan said 'no thanks.'

I can support continuing with the monarchy with one provision - All royalty are actually prohibited from entering the country. They can be on my pocket change and we'll hang a picture or two so long as they stay away.

I don't think many people writing in the media have a clue. I'll bet most have never read the document.
This is evident whenever the Senate is discussed. Writers in the media put forth the idea of abolishing it as a serious possibility, but never mention that it would be subject to the unanimous provision. Rather large oversight, I should think.

There is talk in the UK of ammending the succession law so that Catholics and first born daughters with younger brothers can take the throne. OK, fine.
Thing is, the Queen is sort of important for all the other countries for which she is also the Queen. The Brits want the backing of all of them, but especially Canada (for some reason, maybe the largest, the oldest, etc).
Here's the hitch. It's in our Constitution that 'the Office of the Queen' requires unanimous assent of all provinces as well as Parliament to make changes to. Trick is there is this one province...
Ohh, boy. This could get good.
I thought Quebec hated the queen because she's not french. So are they opposed to amending the office at all? I would think that they'd like to abolish it if possible.
If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

I'm talking about our senate. You know, the senate that's actually important for something?

It will never be abolished Constitutionally but I hold out hope that some day it will cease to exist in practice. If public sentiment against the institution reaches a point where future appointments become toxic for PMs it may ultimately die from attrition.
We are a long way from that point.

Quebec would be the problem, assuming that their agreement is required. They have not signed the thing.
There is one miniscule item that may make it possible for the government of Quebec to go along if they are needed. They are a Catholic and progressive society. Making a Catholic woman eligible for the throne might have its attraction.
