If Westeros and Essos are the only major landmasses on the planet then the planet's surface must be more watery than Earth's. You'd think that would ameliorate major climate changes.

I really think that they end up facing a nightmare in the north.

Additionally, I would expect that it hits Westenos harder due to the fact that they are more connected to the artic...

It is mentioned that Winterfell is built on a series of hot springs, which is used to provide heat for the inhabitants but also for the "glass gardens", a series of (apparently) greenhouses to grow vegetables.

Maybe the people of Westerfell are different, maybe they're able to put themselves into a sort of state of hibernation. Afterall, Bran Stark survived an entire month without food or water.

Can we all stop being so utterly Polyesque about this thread and start discussing the really important stuff, like discussing new cast members for season three, or how they're going to adapt what is only going to be the first half of the next book...? Instead of endlessly going round and round in circles, getting bogged down in the minutiae of stuff in the background of the show with this pseudo-intellectual mind**** about the various lengths of winter and just how big the continent of Westeros is...

No. I haven't even seen Season 2 yet thanks to a unilateral change in the service agreement with my cable provider. HBO was supposed to be provided with my Digital HD plus service, but they decided otherwise after a change in management.

As for the adaptation of A Storm of Swords, I'm glad that they're only going with half the book for this season - if only because that means there's going to be even more seasons!

Also allow for the last two books to come out before the show catches up (hopefully ).

Also, the way they've basically decided to adapt it as a whole, instead of rigidly sticking to the books, means that they can move things around, cut crap out and address the massively clunky timeline issues that became increasingly apparent from about this time onwards, and was probably the reason why it took GRRM so long to write his most recent installment...

So, to sum up: Yaaay!

What are you kidding? The show is going to love all that timeline crap - they'll go all hogwild in Season 5 about showing off the new folks/places.

I'm still not clear what the point of sending Arya to Braavos was, or if there was any point at all, beyond "****, what the hell do I do with her now?" I feel that way for several characters at this point, like, "oh, I have to put them somewhere."
