This is it exactly. There is plenty of oil where the economic cost of extraction is higher than what is feasible...for now. Current prices do seem to be closing in on where it will make sense to tap into some of these sources, Oil will be around for a long time. It is just how much will we pay for it is the question.

There has been a downward trend in oil discoveries.

If anyone has an hour to spare (I'm looking at you Al), watch this Albert Bartlett lecture. There are eight parts. It may not seem relevant at first but it will.

It looks to me like that chart only includes traditional oil, not things like oil sands?

Oil sands alone account for hundreds of billions of barrels of oil. The technology to economically extract them has not been around until relatively recently. The VAST majority of that resource is untapped.

it's not like we do not have viable alternatives to oil today, even for transportation... as oil becomes too expensive we will just switch

Well, I don't really need porn. I plan getting married to tons of Mormon women within my compound.

How many tons do you think would be necessary? Are you taking into account weight loss due to malnutrition before you start in with the cannibalism? It seems to me that you get the best edible to non-edible ratio from heftier girls. Or am I missing something?
