Yes - such as thinking no Iowan has ever socialized with, or befriended black people, or people of other racial minority groups.

Interesting thread, lets take a look.

I think the fact that the Public Policy Polling was founded by Democratic pollster Dean Debnam is somewhat relevant.

Here is the question from PPP:
Do you think interracial marriage should be legal or illegal?
              - 40% said legal
              - 46% said illegal
              - 14% were not sure

Well a few may have been confused by the wording into thinking the question was about gay marriage... but I don't think that would win them any friends on Apolyton.

Nationally people used to respond in the late 90s and early 2000s with opposition below 10% in the GSS, they stopped asking the question after that.

My google-fu tellse me that Razib has already beat me to the punch. He looked at RACMAR (1998-2002) for East South Central Only (Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Tennessee):

              Ban interracial marriage
              Liberal 16
              Moderate 28
              Conservative 30
              Democrat 19
              Independent 28
              Republican 34

Mississippi is the least populous of the states and the most conservative, yet Razib notes that its a bit strange that 10 years later such figures still prevailed. He also notes that some people might resent the AntiChrist in the Whitehouse and therefore seek to ban women and men from going after strange flesh

He also points out two very weird tabs:

This seems... strange. With the rise of political correctness and strong support in mass media and public education, how is such a result even possible?

But the age results confuse me. The GSS doesn’t indicate any increased opposition to interracial marriage among conservative/Republican respondents 10 years ago in the East South Central region. On the contrary.
Do people really want to rebel against their parents that much? Or has the unease many Whites across the US feel at their inevitable marginalization found a weird outlet in Redneckland, causing them to go Jared Taylor or even David Duke instead of Worshipping Martin Luther King as a saint and great conservative thinker (LOL) while going out of their to assure people that the Tea Party isn't racist or focused only on things White people are concerned about (its probably not racist by any reasonable definition but to deny the latter is laughable)? Or could it be only racialist White people are having children while aracialists (liberal or conservative) and libertarians (who can be racist but wouldn't support such a ban) are as sterile as White Liberals are in some other states? It would be a very interesting sociological question, attitude to race and how it relates to fertility in women or men. I assume in men it would have a negative correlation due to marginalization, but in females it might positive enough to overcome that. In minority groups (off all socio-economic rankings) a strong ethnic identity has been tied to better mental and physical health, I'm not sure if it correlated with fertility in a noticeable way, will go check. Perhaps the same will become true of minority Whites at some point (no study was done on American Whites so far so it might be true even now when they are still the majority in many states)?

Also a breakdown by sex and age would be interesting.

Also a very plausible explanation might be that since it was a pooling of the 400 usual Mississippi Republican primary voters, the active voting demographics that go Republican has changed amongst the young.

But again. Such speculation is unwarranted by as single slightly anomalous study.

Their thinking goes there are only so many "good" black men and all to many of those seem to prefer white women when they get a chance; that leaves fewer "good" black men for black women forcing them to accept less good black men or even bad black men if they don't want to marry outside of their race. Yes, obviously some black men also have feel the taboo about marrying white women other wise there wouldn't be such a high rejection of intermarriage by blacks as a whole. That said, black men (especially financially successful black men) are way more willing to marry outside of their race, on average, then black women are.

I think that's part of a long term historical theme of bias in American history. White women were held up to be the most desirable of all females while black women were seen a playthings for white men or for black men who couldn't do better (like get a lighter skinned mate [one of the elusive light skinned black women] or best of all a white woman but failing that an Asian or other nonblack mate). There is a ton of research about how even black men prefer light skinned black women to dark skinned black women and white women above both and I think that has left a historical mark just as similar thinking has left a legacy in Latin America. Hell, even South Asians and East Asians have a bias towards lighter skinned mates so talk about internalizing foreign racism.
I just wanted to point out that most men through history where more willing to marry out of their race/ethnicity all other things being equal.

Its not that widely known that in the US today there are many more White Male - Asian Female marriages than Black Male - White Female ones.

Isn't there less of racist stigma against white men marrying Asian women compared to other types of interracial marriages?

With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

                        Someone from Missisipi?

Anyway have you ever seen in what hilarious ways a significant % of people misunderstand polling questions?

There is a bit of truth to the dumb Hillybilly stereotype. Several regions in Appalachia have White IQs in the low 90s. Could there be groups like that present in significant numbers in Mississippi? Also regardless of race, IQ scores are consistently lower near tropical climates a by a point or two most likley due to environmental factors.

Black interracial marriage rates may be depressed by the effect you speak of by a quite a bit.

However the basic point males generally care less about the race of their sexual partners is borne out on preference studies.
