Disater has struck. Tomato prices could double or even triple after mass sabotage of tomato crops. The consequences could be terrible and unimaginable. See below for extract from the Sydney Morning Herald and follow the link for the full article.

Tomato prices across Australia could double or triple in coming months after millions of seedlings were poisoned in an act of mass sabotage in north Queensland.

Tomato prices across Australia could double or triple in coming months after millions of seedlings were poisoned in an act of mass sabotage in north Queensland.
About seven million plants, including about four million tomato seedlings, have been lost after they were poisoned with a herbicide at a Bowen nursery in June. Other affected crops include capsicum, melons and eggplant.
Bowen Growers Association spokeswoman Denise Kreymborg said the Bowen region was the largest producer of winter vegetables and the poisoning would affect about 30 to 40 growers in the area.
Established crops were not affected. But Ms Kreymborg predicted a price spike around September, when the poisoned crops would have been on the market.
‘‘You can expect prices to double or even triple, we don’t know for sure,’’ she said. ‘‘There’s still going to be tomatoes, capsicum, melons, zucchinis and eggplants grown in this area, just not as much.’’

You realize that climate change (even the climate getting warmer on average) still means there will be cold spells, right? Weather vs Climate (short term events vs long term averages)?

I tried growing my own last year but they got eaten by too many bugs. I may try again this year though (indoors).

Try interplanting basil and hot peppers in with the tomatoes. It can confuse the hell out of the little pests, and more than a few big ones.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

If you really want to do it right add a couple pot plants to the mix.

                Just sayin'.

That can attract a whole 'nother kind of pest.

Thanks, I'll try that. I was going to try hot peppers this year anyway. I've still got bell peppers producing fruit in one of my front windows. They're now a pretty decent size and I just kept em going.

                            Plausible deniability.

I once planted pot seeds in a police department flower bed.

Magic mushrooms grow wild in Vancouver. There was a (in)famous photo in the newspaper of some guys picking them in front of city hall.

                                That explains a lot actually.
