It is being reported that there is a discrepancy in the count of missing. The list of missing is reported by family members only. If there is no family members left to report then they are not being counted.
    Bad news!?

Anyone that didn't already realise within a couple of days that the death toll of the tsunami will be well into the tens of thousands is frankly a bit simple.
Is it me, or is MOBIUS a horrible person?

The water that is sprayed on the buildings to cool the rods( or what ever they are cooling) will the run off be contaminated?
What do you think? Frankly I have to applaud a 50 year old power station that withstood a 9.0 earthquake and tsunami and only got into difficulties because the power failed. Has there been a mushroom cloud? No.

      Nuclear power FTW, baby!

I felt it would be higher but I'm trying to stay optimistic.

Why would it not be bad news if the count is higher than first thought?
They are reporting the official toll is wrong because the count of missing is only reported from living relatives. If there are no living relatives left to report them missing then they are is not being counted in the official missing count. The real count is higher than the official count.

                • Teacher Who Loved Japan Identified as First U.S. Quake Victim

                  .

Taylor Anderson loved Japan since she was a young child, became fluent in the language, and was teaching English in one of the country's coastal cities when the devastating tsunami struck. The Richmond, Va. woman is believed to be the first American victim of the disaster.

The U.S. Embassy in Tokyo says it has tentatively identified the body of Anderson, 24.

Anderson's family has not positively identified the body, officials said. The State Department told ABC News that it was unable to confirm Anderson's death; however, her family released a statement earlier today.

"It is with deep regret that we inform you that earlier this morning we received a call from the U.S. Embassy in Japan that they had found our beloved Taylor's body. We would like to thank all those whose prayers and support have carried us through this crisis. Please continue to pray for all who remain missing and for the people of Japan. We ask that you respect our privacy during this hard time," the statement said.

Anderson was a teacher in the city of Ishinomaki as part of the Japan Exchange and Teaching Program; she'd been participating in the program for 2.5 years.

Jean Anderson told ABC affiliate WVEC-TV that her daughter was last seen after the earthquake. She was riding her bike toward her apartment after ensuring that students at her school had been picked up by their parents. The tsunami hit the shores of Ishinomaki shortly afterward.

The family received news Tuesday that she was safe and in a shelter, but that information was wrong.

Ishinomaki is located in the Miyagi Prefecture, a coastal area that took the full force of the tsunami.

                              • 23.6-meter-high tsunami triggered by March 11 quake: survey

                                TOKYO, March 23, Kyodo News

A tsunami wave that hit a coastal city in Iwate Prefecture after the March 11 massive earthquake is estimated to have reached 23.6 meters in height, a government-commissioned field survey by the Port and Airport Research Institute showed Wednesday.

The tsunami wave measured in the city of Ofunato was lower than the domestic record of 38.2 meters marked in the 1896 Meiji Sanriku Earthquake Tsunami, and 34.9 meters logged in the wake of the 2004 earthquake off the Indonesian coast of Sumatra.

However, Kazuhiko Toda, a researcher at the institute, said the height of the March 11 tsunami was marked under the condition where breakwaters and other counter-tsunami facilities have been set up, so it may have been greater in power than the one in 1896.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, tsunami waves higher than 2 meters can destroy timber houses. Concrete buildings can withstand tsunami up to 4 meters or so, but would also be destroyed if it exceeds 16 meters.

Amazing. Both on the size of the thing but also that it's not record breaking with a greater example just over a century ago (so nothing archaeological but 'living' memory/history). Makes you wonder how the Japanese could have decided to build the nuclear plants where they did. (and possibly other gov's as well)
