It's amazing to me that any buildings are left standing in Sendai.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Called my Japanese friend (he lives in the US), and his family (they live in Japan) are all fine. He was up till 3 AM making phone calls checking up on his family.

              Still, this sucks.

They're saying at least 1,000 dead now.

The US 7th fleet is sending seven ships including an aircraft carrier and several amphibious assault ships. Apparently they are designed to provide humanitarian assistance as a secondary responsibility.

It's kind of nice that our military is able to provide this kind of help.

As are all militaries...a secondary responsibility for most of them is to provide humanitarian aid.

I thought we could use this opportunity to invade Japan and steal all their ramen.

Asher, you'll even try to denigrate the US Navy for this? I think it's rather nice that we are able to deploy such a large volume of resources anywhere in the world, especially to our allies.

Whether or not that is worth the expense of such a large navy isn't a debate I really care to have in this thread.

Also, the USS Essex and USS Blue Ridge which are steaming to Japan have facilities specifically designed to provide aid. I think the USS Ronald Reagan does as well, but I'm not sure.

I'm not denigrating anything. I'm just pointing out it's a common task for militaries. And I don't think this is the time for undue American patriotism.

USA #1 WERE THE MOST SPECIAL COUNTRY IN THE WORLD BECAUSE WE'RE MORE HUMANITARIAN THAN ANY OTHER PLACE PERIOD! HOW DARE YOU DENIGRATE THE UNITED STATES BY POINTING OUT THAT OTHER NATIONS USE THEIR MILITARY TO OFFER HUMANITARIAN SUPPORT TO COUNTRIES AFFECTED BY DISASTERS!!!
