Called my Japanese friend (he lives in the US), and his family (they live in Japan) are all fine.
He was up till 3 AM making phone calls checking up on his family.

The US 7th fleet is sending seven ships including an aircraft carrier and several amphibious assault ships. Apparently they are designed to provide humanitarian assistance as a secondary responsibility.
It's kind of nice that our military is able to provide this kind of help.
