Hey Ogie, why not post more ignorant stuff about Washington politics? Those are always fun to read.“As a lifelong member of the Columbia Business School community, I adhere to the principles of truth, integrity, and respect. I will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do.”

It just goes to show you that the DoD is far more responsible with funds than any other branch of the government. If the DoD says something is underfunded, it probably really is.
That's just a point in evidence that current military spending, if the DoD were allowed to dictate it (as opposed to special interests), is hardly superfluous.
From 2005:
Lawmakers () say it is unwise to close bases while U.S. troops are fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. But the Pentagon argues that the timing is perfect to enlist cost-cutting measures given pressures from the ballooning federal deficit and to reshuffle the stateside network of bases while it reshapes the entire military.
Closures in 1988, 1991, 1993 and 1995 eliminated or realigned 451 installations, including 97 major ones, resulted in a net savings to the government of about $18 billion through 2001. The Pentagon projects recurring annual savings of $7.3 billion from those four rounds combined."Flutie was better than Kelly, Elway, Esiason and Cunningham." - Ben Kenobi

The Pentagon should be in charge of determining the defense budget since they are the only ones who are intimately aware of how much they need to maintain operational effectiveness and they have a history of being relatively responsible (gee... the one branch of government which is primarily a meritocracy) and avoiding the superfluous spending that congressmen support.
These 'significant cuts' that you all want and think would be oh such an easy and obvious way to solve the deficit will get rid of that useless Congressional fluff but also, if significant means what I think it means, cut into necessary expenses. A reduction to late 1990's levels would probably undermine the military's effectiveness and even that would probably not be as 'significant' as some of you want.
If the Pentagon doesn't need useless bases, let them get closed... stupid lawmakers insisting on wasting money... But when it comes to the funding for actually important things like armor for humvees, don't you dare touch that and say the DoD is overfunded. Like I said, there may be some issues with allocation but for the most part, even in a time of war, our per capita defense spending is not that much higher than it has been over the past half-century. And frankly, with an emphasis on technology and minimizing casualties, it SHOULD be higher and rightly so.
We've rightly come a long way from the pittance that it took to support a solder in Vietnam.
But if you all want to go back to the days of sending men out with 6 weeks of training and a rifle, helmet, uniform, and canteen...Last edited by Al B. Sure!; March 8, 2011, 16:35."Flutie was better than Kelly, Elway, Esiason and Cunningham." - Ben Kenobi

Yes, I know that local communities don't want bases closed that the Pentagon doesn't need, that's EXACTLY the point of reducing defense spending?
The Pentagon should be in charge of their budget?!! HELL NO! We don't live in a police state. We have civilian control of the military for a reason.“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. I'll take that over having military control over any civilian policy.“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
