As I said, I'm fine with using demographics to set rates as long as they're consistent and reasonable.

If you're using age and sex, also use profession, sexual orientation, race, etc. They could mine that information if they wanted to, but if they did they'd have to give people like me a break on my rates. And why would they do that?

I'm getting high rates because they look at my age and gender and assume I'm some irresponsible hooligan who drives drunk, stunt drives, and street races. I find it pretty offensive.

One of my friends who did have an at fault accident had his insurance barely go up at 17. It was already high enough as it is, I guess there was no need to put it up more.

Saskatchewan Government Insurance. You pay more with a bad driving record, less if you have a clean record and age/sex don't factor in at all.

I'm 27 with a still-perfect driving record, fully insured since I've been 16 continuously, and with a "group rate" insurance company for professionals and I'm paying $1400/year now. It was three times that for the exact same coverage when I lived in Toronto. And this rate is with no insurance on MY car, it's all third party liability.

          It's pathetic, really.

The only good thing about getting old is cheaper car insurance. Our car is insured under my GF's name so we get it relatively cheaper. I can't say I'm looking forward to the increase though as they'll make it more expensive for women, and doubtless pocket the profits.

Asher, the amounts you've quoted as having to pay sound horrendous. Don't worry though, you'll be getting old too soon.

I was told when I hit 25, it got way cheaper. I think it went up $100 that year... (Ontario is so ****ed up with car insurance)

Since their incentive is to find the most accurate way to price the risk, based on any factors, I don't understand why we don't let them use anything they want. If it's correlated with risk, they can price better and we have a more efficient solution with people paying closer to their true cost of risk. There's no incentive for them to discriminate arbitrarily.

But as you say, why is gender, race and sexual orientation not ok, but age is fine. Does seem an arbitrary set of restrictions.

I think Ontario was hard on Asher because they knew he was from Alberta.

                  I've had 1 at fault claim and I pay $75 a month.

I couldn't imagine paying thousands. I drive a sports car (albeit not the most powerful one), I'm 26, and I pay ~£600 a year fully-comp. I thought that was a bit much, as it was well under £300 a year for my old Ford Ka.

                              I like my theory better.

My insurance company thinks I live in Kingston.

                                Früher wär das nicht passiert

Taking the gender of the insured individual into account as a risk factor in insurance contracts constitutes discrimination.
Suuuure. This will definitly screw most men in private pension plans
Those wacky belgians with their EU Law schemes.. always trying to make life more difficult. Surely the new Unisex Tarifs wont pose any statistical problems.

                                Nooooo Problem at all.

Also why is the article focused on car insurance?
