  • Dead Island WARNING! very graphic!

    WARNING!
This is pretty intense stuff. A child dying, lots of gore.
Should there censorship in video games?
How far does one have to go to push the boundaries?
    Your thoughts?

I found this comment on CBS news after making this post.

(CBS) - How on Earth can a video game trailer make you cry? I'm a pretty tough guy, but honestly did mist up a little watching this announcement trailer for Dead Island.

The game is being developed by Deep Silver for the PC, XBox360 and Playstation 3 and while we're sure that in the actual game you will spend most of your time knee deep in zombie blood, there is something stirringly cinematic about this trailer that makes you remember why you love film.

Could this be a last minute "dark horse" for the Oscars? Don't count on it. But if you can watch this all the way through without getting at least a tiny bit misty-eyed (in a good way), you're tougher than me.

For anyone who is curious, you can watch a fan-made recut of the trailer that shows the actual progression of events without the fascinating jumps in time used in the original.

I think it's out of hand.

I'm starting to accept the fact that our youth is getting desensitized to human life.

I see no reason to censor video games any more than we censor movies. At present, the ratings system seems to be slightly less rigorous than that used for movies (I could be wrong; I have no reason to know, being old enough to play any game regardless, and childless). I'm fine with that.

You do realize that the game is going to be rated M, right?

The last non-sports console game I bought that wasn't rated M was Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2. The funny thing about that is Rainbow Six: Vegas was rated M and the games are pretty much the same except Rainbow Six had cursing and Ghost Recon didn't.

Cursing, not violence, is the distinction between T and M in the case of those games. On the official descriptions, T may contain violence whereas M is for strong violence but I can't imagine that there was any difference in the levels of violence between the two games which also had no sexual content. Cursing is what done did it.

I actually wonder if there are any good games made now that aren't rated M?

Cursing is not the only part. Blood and gore is enough to make it an M game. Very slight amounts of blood (nosebleeds, small cuts/scrapes) aren't enough to make it M though if I recall correctly.

Yeah but I can't imagine how Rainbow Six was any more bloody than Ghost Recon. I could be wrong since it's been a while since I played them but those games were nearly identical. Cursing was the biggest difference that would affect ratings. I remember cursing clearly because it was mentioned a lot in previews and reviews and I got a little kick out of it at the time.

If you really want to cry then take a look at these pics, but be warned, it's very bad

SC2 was rated T, I think. And Civ 5 (okay, not a good game), and Recettear, and Minecraft.

I hear Fox News recently made some absurd brouhaha about a game called Bulletstorm, claiming it would turn teenagers into rapists...solely because the game uses sexual names for certain ways of killing enemies.
