The cabbage, carrots, and maize flour certainly aren't native to Africa so why do you whine about white South African food not being African enough and then post this colonial dish which uses food stuffs Europeans introduced to east Africa?



I actually really like Ethiopian food and recognized it right off the bat but although Ethiopia did domesticate one local grain (the one used for the national flat bread served with every meal) and a few vegitables the vast majority of the food grown in the Ethiopian highlands is Eurasian in origin. In fact, so much so I would be tempted to call it North African rather then truly Africa because they pretty much use the same fertile crescent crops and animals.



I honestly had no idea what this was before I looked it up but Eritrea historically was a part of Ethiopia for a very long time and just like the rest of Ethiopia it's food production was based on many (most) of the same crops used in the Mid-east and Europe. Again, what makes this "African" enough for you but South African food isn't African enough for you?

If you really wanted food which is uniquely African of all African origin then my guess is you'd have to find out what peasants in the Sahel region or the tropical west African region were making prior to the spread of Eurasian influences in Africa (Islamic and then later European colonialism). Both of those areas had agriculture develop based on local domesticates and both were completely different from each other; the Sahel has summer rains with little seasonal change in temperature or daily light while tropical west Africa is mostly rain forest so it's crops were mainly root or orchard type crops. Or you could just stop trying to pretend that one dish or another isn't "African" enough and just shut up and eat the food.

Am I the only one troubled by the appearance of that Ethiopian food? Almost every item there looks more like a badly digested post-meal deposit than an appetizing dish.

Yeah, but it tastes great. The injira bread (I believe that's what it's called) uses a type of grain only grown in Ethiopia and it has a very spongy texture so it soaks up all that stuff nicely. They also use a lot of spices from the mideast and India to flavor the food so it smells and tastes great even if it doesn't look great.

I'm passing no judgment on the taste.

It's just that out of the entire selection the only thing that doesn't look like something that has come out of my dog is the leafy greens on the side. There isn't a "solid" food in the group.
