  • Poker skills off the table

I was pretty happy with my number last year, and I want to ensure that I remain happy. So I decided to engage in a little gamesmanship...

We just found out that the most senior guy in our group outside my boss is leaving very soon (on his own recognizance). I got handed a lot of his responsibilities, which I've been getting up to speed on (and I'm also keeping enough of my old responsibilities that I'm going to attempt to delegate to the more junior members of the group). I've therefore become a more critical element. So while in a one-on-one with my boss, I "joked" about what he would do once I decided to leave. He freaked the **** out. Giving me valuable information and leverage.

It turns out there's no rule against string betting in real life...

Yes, before you ask, I am very proud of myself

    we're proud of you too

umm...what exactly did you do again?

You joked about not being there? Was that actual manipulation or unintentional?

He made a couple of comments that guaranteed they weren't going to take him for granted.

And then he posted something here as if it was a clever move, and not common sense stuff that everyone does.

Good god. It's quite straightforward: in an attempt to gain information I fed my boss a vague impression that I was thinking about leaving. I used his reaction to gauge my current value to him.

In poker, a string bet is where a player makes an apparent commitment to one course of action, then upon observing his opponent's reaction changes course. So, the classic "I call...and raise" is a string bet. There are specific rules limiting this behavior in most casinos and serious home games. One way to engage in a similar strategy without running afoul of the rules is to begin counting/playing with your chips while considering your course of action (without pushing them toward the pot, which would be considered a commitment). Touching your chips usually gives your opponent the impression that you intend to call/bet/raise. Note that this can also be used prior to your opponent's action in order to induce him to check instead of betting. If you want to see a free card then this is a great play (assuming you can sell it)

You've completely misunderstood. In 8 months or so I will once again begin pushing the impression that they can't take me for granted (to coincide with the correct point in the paycycle). This move was purely to gain information. It was therefore much more subtle.

This reminds me, I've got to be in top form starting in March/April (reviews run from August to September)

Also, if you would like to play poker, I am always available...

I know I'm no good at poker. Too easy to read, too lazy to think about the odds.

I still don't think what KH did was anything remarkable though, but well done for adjusting to the real world of work.

Now is the time to go all in... tell them you're leaving if they don't give you your soul (or at least a soul) back
