  • Hillary Clinton calls historic meeting of ambassadors

    http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0111/48471.html

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has called top envoys from U.S. embassies to gather in Washington on Monday for a wide-ranging foreign policy meeting.

Ambassadors from almost all 260 U.S. embassies, consulates and other posts in more than 180 countries are expected to convene at the State Department for what’s being billed as the first meeting of its kind.

Officials say the meeting will include discussion of foreign policy priorities for 2011, The Associated Press reported, as well as an assessment of the fallout from the release of secret diplomatic cables by WikiLeaks. Clinton will meet individually with diplomats working in unstable countries.

The meeting comes as protests continue in Egypt, where longtime President Hosni Mubarak could soon be pushed out of power. On Sunday, Clinton appeared in taped appearances on all five major TV talk shows to discuss what she called the need for “real democracy” in Egypt, while trying to avoid committing to siding with any one party in the conflict.

Clinton returned early Monday from a one-day trip to Haiti, where she met with the country’s presidential candidates. She insisted that though the U.S. government has political differences with Haiti, it will continue to support its rebuilding in the wake of last January’s devastating earthquake.

“We have a deep commitment to the Haitian people,” she said Sunday. “That goes to humanitarian aid, that goes to governance and democracy programs, that will be going to a cholera treatment center.”

The ambassadors hold meetings with their regional bureaus Monday and Tuesday. Clinton is set to address the ambassadors Wednesday about “leading through civilian power,” after a welcome from her chief of staff and counselor, Cheryl Mills. U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Susan Rice will then forecast the year ahead at the United Nations, and Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Bill Burns will do the same for the year ahead in foreign policy.

The ambassadors will also hear from Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mike Mullen on civilian-military operations in the 21st century, and USAID chief Raj Shah will speak on results-based development.

New Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Budget Thomas Nides will discuss the budget for 2011 and beyond.

But on that point, one official questioned why “every ambassador in the world was required to come back to the States for a group of lectures when this could have been done virtually,” noting that almost every ambassador flies business class, so costs could quickly add up.

The diplomatic powwow wraps up Friday, when the ambassadors fly back to their missions.

    Weird!

I was trying to find out some info about this meeting and this popped up a well.

    Comet Elenin Is Coming

    http://solarwatch.wordpress.com/
It is called Elenin since it was discovered by Leonid Elenin. I expect the internet to soon be ringing with rumors and news bytes about this comet. For now, there isn’t much to say so I’m sharing what I’ve received in private from an astronomer at a big observatory that shall remain anonymous for the moment. He says:

    1. It is too early to accurately predict the future path – it’s orbital parameters haven’t been revised.

    2. Among the observable hyperbolic and parabolic comets (those that come from the Oort cloud) this one has the smallest perihelion distance and the smallest inclination to the ecliptic plane.

    3. Comet Elenin’s orbit may be unstable as it may encounter some dark bodies, for example, in the asteroid belt or even some Taurid objects. What would happen in those cases is a matter of luck.

    4. This comet may carry a significant amount of material with it and if it follows the currently projected orbit, the Earth may very well pass through this material.

    5. If Elenin is anything like what Victor Clube or James McCanney describes, we might be in for some surprises – good or bad, who knows?

When this was first discovered in December last year it was calculated that it would pass 8.8 Au (8.8 times the distance of the Sun from us) away. Now today the orbital calculation is down to 0.24 Au with a minimum as low as 0.15. This is being re-calculated all the time and could get even closer but it depends what it encounters with the Taurid meteor belt (See image below).

The Moon is 0.00256 Au from us to give you a comparison.

You should be aware the this comet could bring debris with it and we will pass through the debris trail – if it exists – around the 6th November 2011. Leonid Elenin discovered it…Can you remember the name of the boy who discovers the comet in Deep Impact? Yeah, its LEO. You have to be kidding! There are too many coincidences turning up with this thing! That make my blood go cold. I know it is only a film but who knows from whence the inspiration? What ethereal influences upon the writer?Sorry, tinfoil hat off now. Yes it is certainly going to be very interesting this year!

    I SAW THAT MOVIE!

Dude comets are just comets. They're nothing to worry about. But they're pretty cool because of panspermia. I don't know what that has to do with Hillary though.

Err, panspermia is just a theory. We don't actually have any good proof that life evolved that way.

If you say so. Although I read an article a few weeks back that said some bacteria had survived an entire trip on the shuttle or something like that.

Probably to discuss the deep **** they're in WRT Egypt:

First they're backing Mubarak; then they're not sure; then they want him replaced with Suleiman; now they've suddenly realised that Sulieman is Mubarak-lite...

There was a clear course of action, which I've already described in the other thread. They should have stuck to it, but they didn't and now they look dumb as usual.

Not only that, but the US can't even threaten Egypt with pulling all its $1.5bn military aid - talk about being caught with their dicks hanging out - Hilary included!

Is there anything more incompetent, ineffectual and counter-productive than US foreign policy!!?

                      Argentine foreign police?

Just trying to think of the last time the US gave an uprising its support and then didn't back it up...

The Shi-ites and Kurds directly after Desert Storm?

I seem to remember that ending in a bloody massacre for the Shi-ites at least...

To be fair, there is a difference between "yeah, it would be fabulous if you threw out your dictator and became a US friendly republic" and "great, our troops will be ready to roll out, just give the word".

                              Personally I am glad that $1 != $2.
