Since this thread has been won by Cort Haus and Asher already, let's move on to a more interesting topic:

I think anyone who believes ANWR needs to be protected should have to live there. Who's with me?

Yep, because you're so intellectually on the ball, Boris. Taking advice from you is like a crash course in life.

I'm not sure about the entrepreneuralism rate in Alaska but the state is clearly the most socialist of all American states. It gives cash payments every year to every man, woman, and child in the state plus it has several large state owned companies.

Won? Wow, can you please tell me about Denmark and Switzerland's secret oil billions? Heck, I'd even dispute that oil money has much of an effect on Canada's entreprenuerism rate for the country as a whole or at least the effect isn't as large as some here are claiming.

Keep on rocking with that attitude, boy. You may eventually rise out of your ivory-bathroom masturbator condition.

This has nothing to do with what you were talking about.

Operating wells has **** all to do with owning the resource.

Additionally, "Statoil" is not the "Norwegian Government". Unless you believe when people buy shares in Statoil they're buying parts of Norway?

Statoil is a public company -- Norway's government just happens to own a majority share.

One other factor is that the better the social safety net, the less risk involved in starting your own business.

Yeah, I think that's one reasonable factor that could possibly be part of it.

Well it's possible that higher taxes could in and of themselves help increase the number of small business startups. If you're driving away all the big businesses, small mom and pop shops are more viable.

There have been tons of studies showing that very, very few businesses leave the state to move to other states in the US. Tons leave to set up shop in China though especially manufacturing. Over all California's taxes are right about at the US average. 26th out of 50 so please spare me the "California has high taxes" nonsense.

Even if the oil is government owned, profits from the oil allow governments to provide better services to the businesses without increasing taxes. Improved infrastructure, better legal services with lower fees, and even direct cash payments to residents (like in Alaska) can encourage small business. Of course, you need the rule of law, otherwise you're left with an Arab style oil economy, where petroleum replaces a functioning economy instead of boosting it.
                              John Brown did nothing wrong.
