New health scare over Tate Sunflower Seeds exhibition

One of the most striking exhibitions at the Tate Modern for years is at the centre of a new health scare.

The BBC has learned that the installation of 100 million porcelain "sunflower seeds" was made in China using paint containing lead.

People were initially able to walk on and pick up the "seeds" but this was soon banned after concerns over the amount of ceramic dust created.

The Tate says the installation poses no health risk in its present form.
    Safety checks

The work created by Chinese artist Ai Weiwei in the vast Turbine Hall for the Tate's annual Unilever Series was cordoned off from the public just days after opening in October because of the concerns about dust.

BBC arts editor Will Gompertz says the latest revelation will raise more questions about possible health risks, and whether the Tate carried out enough safety checks.

The Tate said in a statement: "The tests show that traces of lead are present in the material of the seeds and the dust that resulted from the interaction with the work by visitors.

"The results showed that exposure to the dust during the period when the work could still be walked on was below the relevant workplace exposure limits.
What is it with the bloody Chinese? Is there no depth they will not sink to in terms of the sh*t they continually pump out...or are they just trying to poison the west? They really need to sort this crap out in the regulation of what they can make.

Those sunflowers, with their bright and sunny petals...who'd have thought they'd be a yellow peril?

Seriously, they're a developing country run by a pack of crooked, nominally-socialist bureaucrats. What do you expect?

I was really excited when I first heard about this installation, but then they closed it the next day.

The turbine hall being full of poisonous ceramic sunflower seeds. Now that really is some challenging modern art

Chinese products are ****, particularly computer components and car parts from what I've heard and experienced.

That explains it. The whole point is that the seeds, being seeds, are an emblem of new life, but contain within them hidden, unseen things--"dormant seeds," if you will--that induce an unpleasant death! It's a paradox demonstrating the inseparability of life and death. Brilliant!

Now they just need somebody to urinate on a traditional Chinese religious artifact, and they'll be tearing up the art world.

Yeah, have seen those sunflower pits. Anyways, the English have a way of making a big boo-boo out of anything, and the Chinese are in the habit of cutting corners. What's new?

                  You's trollin'.

It should be an implicit expectation that an interactive art piece would not contain hazardous materials. The contractor has been negligent in 2 significant ways, and the use of lead based paint is inexcusable due to the expected pattern of use of the product.

It's racism for pointing out that the Chinese pump out dodgy sh*t at bargain basement prices?

If the Chinese are still legally using lead pipes and lead based paints then you might have a point
