That would explain it. It really is a rather unimpressive town.

Apparently the writer drove by Pontypool (Ontario ) and that inspired the title.

There was a ''zombie big brother'' series/film/whatever called dead set, it would seem. Caused a bit of a buzz at the time iirc

It may be somewhat unimaginative to name another town pontypool, however the prospect of a ''New pontypool'' fills me with dread due its hollow promises, broken condoms and pregnant teens

It turns out this was created by the excellent Charlie Brooker, of newswipe - and most importantly imo - gameswipe fame. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIb8JdoWF00
. For those in the off topic who love their games (especially the games us brits grew up playing)

                      "Bridge of"

Lots of ponts and bonts in Wales!

Pontypool is the anglicised version of the Welsh Pontypwll - which basically means the same thing...

Yes, and it's making a comeback. About 20% of the population is fluent. Welsh speakers are mostly to the north and west in the country, where fluency can reach over 60% in some of the counties...

But is it a language in everyday use or just around the dinner table?

20% is impressive for a minority language.

I doubt many of our native tribes would hit that these days.

Definitely every day use. You can frequently hear it being spoken in the streets in Cardiff and most stuff is bilingual here. Also, learning Welsh is compulsory in English speaking schools and there are more and more Welsh medium schools opening every year. There's radio stations, a TV channel, magazines and newspapers - definitely a living language - as opposed to a zombie language...

                              21.7%, to be exact.
