Jack LaLanne, the fitness guru who inspired television viewers to trim down, eat well and pump iron for decades before diet and exercise became a national obsession, died Sunday. He was 96.

LaLanne died of respiratory failure due to pneumonia Sunday afternoon at his home in Morro Bay on California's central coast, his longtime agent Rick Hersh said.

He just swam 20 miles from LA to Catalina Island on his 95th birthday. Not sure what he did for his 96th. I am a little shocked that he's actually mortal after all.

At 96 he had a good innings.

    Never heard of him though.

Here are some of his feats post-60 years old... let the extremeness of what he was doing sink in... then think about his age when he was doing the following:

1974 (age 60): For the second time, he swam from Alcatraz Island to Fisherman's Wharf. Again, he was handcuffed, but this time he was also shackled and towed a 1,000-pound (450 kg; 71 st) boat.
1975 (age 61): Repeating his performance of 21 years earlier, he again swam the entire length of the Golden Gate Bridge, underwater and handcuffed, but this time he was shackled and towed a 1,000-pound (450 kg; 71 st) boat.
1976 (age 62): To commemorate the "Spirit of '76", United States Bicentennial, he swam one mile (1.6 km) in Long Beach Harbor. He was handcuffed and shackled, and he towed 13 boats (representing the 13 original colonies) containing 76 people.
1979 (age 65): towed 65 boats in Lake Ashinoko, near Tokyo, Japan. He was handcuffed and shackled, and the boats were filled with 6,500 pounds (2,900 kg; 460 st) of Louisiana Pacific wood pulp.[13]
1980 (age 66): towed 10 boats in North Miami, Florida. The boats carried 77 people, and he towed them for over one mile (1.6 km) in less than one hour.
1984 (age 70): Handcuffed, shackled and fighting strong winds and currents, towed 70 boats with 70 people from the Queen’s Way Bridge in the Long Beach Harbor to the Queen Mary, 1 ½ miles.
He would do something ridiculous on each birthday. Like I said, on his 95th, he swam the 20 miles from LA to Catalina Island.

        That is extreme, extremely extreme.

Not the sort of things I would even think about attempting at my considerably younger age. The very thought of towing boats while handcuffed has me exhausted. I think I need a jolly cup of tea and a lie down to recuperate.

Imagine if Americans actually listened to LaLanne back in the 1950's when he was saying this:

And to think he finally died... and with respiratory failure brought on by pneumonia at that. I would've thought his heart and lungs were the strongest set of 96 year old heart and lungs to ever exist.

Yeah, we all go eventually. I'd love to know where I'm going to die. I'd never go near the place. Seems like a good plan but i'm having a bit of trouble finding out the "where" bit.

That doesn't even make any sense.

Googling, it says LaLanne was 5'6" 150lbs although I don't know if that's how much he weighed in his 90's or in his prime. Nevertheless, run that through a BMI calculator... BMI of 24.2, 25 being considered overweight, so right on the cusp. 6' 190lb is 25.8 BMI, not substantially different.

Obviously, a simple height-weight ratio is not sufficient to make any statements about health or obesity. Terrell Owens is 6'3" 224lbs (BMI of 28.0). That is very overweight and almost obese by BMI standards. Obviously, Terrell Owens isn't fat.

                    BMI ignores body composition.

There are fat 6 foot men who weigh 190lbs but there are also 6' 190lb men with <5% body fat and everything in between. Height and weight are not sufficient to make a statement about a person's health or physical condition.

You implied that you consider 6' 190lb men fat. I pointed out that height and weight are not sufficient to determine one's physical condition because height and weight say nothing about body composition.

I said no such thing. I said that there are fatties who are 6 feet tall and weigh 190 pounds. The marines don't make recruits take literacy tests do they?

Hey dumbass, you and I both know that your statements meant more than their face value. You were taking a shot at me and my statements in the babe thread. The context speaks volumes.
