Ahh, getting old so most of those memories our gone but I remember one that had to with the number of votive candles in a church and how they were ordered designated different thing.Originally posted by Elok View Post...uh, and that's my opinion.
And yes you're right, all the little details add to the richness of any mythology (religious or pop culture). All the extra details that made the Lord of the Rings more than just a story book. Or Star Wars. Or the latest, Avatar. (which is beyond me since it was such a cheesy movie with a recycled plot. But at least the special effects were decent, and now that I think of it, no different than star wars hahahahah)It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Yep. Dan has mentioned his Catholicism, as does Ozzy (in addition, on Facebook, Ozzy "Like" every religious status update I put upOriginally posted by Elok View PostI believe DanS is Catholic as well. Maybe Ozzy too, and there are probably others I'm just not thinking of.

“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Are you inferring that if a person stops practicing his religion his comments about said religion are no longer legit?Originally posted by Kidicious View PostI've only seen an argument from Barnabas, that I can remember. I welcome any legit comments from actual catholics. It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Sheeple

I think such detail is intriguing in mythologies and such in large part because they mirror the way we experience everything else: there's a charming depth to be seen if you care to look for it. Even if you don't care to look, you'll see hints of it, but it isn't forced on you. You can walk through the woods in spring, see the new leaves on the trees, feel and hear the old ones crunching underfoot, smell that funny but not unpleasant damp smell--all of them clues to deeper things, but you can love them as they are. Or you can get down and dirty with a microscope, see how those new leaves are working like mad to turn air, light and water into power and life, look at the vacuoles and cell walls and all the rest of it. And there you're appreciating nature in a different, but not necessarily better, way. And the way they are present but not obvious leads you on to know more. If you really need to know who Elbereth is, you can go into the Silmarillion and learn it all. Want to know why Christ always has a red inner garment and a drab blue robe? There are books for that too.Originally posted by rah View PostAhh, getting old so most of those memories our gone but I remember one that had to with the number of votive candles in a church and how they were ordered designated different thing.

I didn't care for Avatar, personally. Not just for the plot, I loathe Hollywood Liberal preachiness, and it lacked the cute fusion of themes and archetypes present in the original Star Wars Trilogy. But that's a matter for another thread, or when another couple of Kid posts drive me bonkers enough to go into it anyway.

I'm saying that the argument from ex-catholics or whoever on this thread is stupid, and I don't want to be bothered by them.Originally posted by rah View PostAre you inferring that if a person stops practicing his religion his comments about said religion are no longer legit?I drank beer. Are you the sort of person who jerks off to S&M porn or something? Sorry to get personal, but that's the only type of person I can conceive of who would enjoy the addition of Ken Benobi to a thread.Originally posted by gribbler View PostHey, it could only make this thread more entertaining.

Ah, so you're really looking for people to agree with you and not actually interested in any type of meaningful debate. That's what I thought.Originally posted by Kidicious View PostI'm saying that the argument from ex-catholics or whoever on this thread is stupid, and I don't want to be bothered by them. It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. No, he's not doing that either. What he's doing is essentially the written equivalent of small children playing cops and robbers: whenever someone shoots at him, he screams "You missed me!" and refuses to be gainsaid, whereas any shot of his gets a "Ha, I got you! I shot you dead into A MILLION TINY PIECES and then I blew up all the little pieces and ate them up and POOPED THEM OUT." Normally, the other kids get sick of playing with someone like this, but for some reason you all find it entertaining and continue to play.Originally posted by rah View PostAh, so you're really looking for people to agree with you and not actually interested in any type of meaningful debate. It's difficult to say exactly how stupid that is. I think Imran pointed in the right direction when he said, "you seem to not have heard of the Protestant Reformation," or something like that.
You're losing credibility here Elok. Ming and the rest have acted repugnantly. They don't need your encouragement.I drank beer. I like beer. I still like beer. ... Do you like beer Senator?

Credibility in whose eyes? And what was the last post in this thread that you replied to with a serious, considered response? As opposed to some permutation of "Holy crap, it is so ironic that you would say something like that. I am laughing, that is how ironic it is. Because it's so ironic, it's funny. And it's ironic because you're stupid. And you don't know you're stupid, because you're stupid. It's that funny. Also, you're immoral."
That's pretty much the formula for 90% of the posts you've made in this thread. You don't reply to the content of a post or engage the people you're talking with, you just type the equivalent of an annoying, self-satisfied grin. If there were a :smuglittledouche: smiley you wouldn't bother with text at all.
