If you looked at something besides OT, you'd know.

No one should ever look at any forum other than the OT.

Yeah, it's screwed, although avatars still seem to be working for some reason...

Because only the static cache server is down -- static images. Avatars are tied to VBulletin.

And the server is not down. It's alive and well. They just "forgot" to change the DNS when they switched servers.

Filosofical question: if you link directly to your cache server, is it really a cache?

Yes, because ideally it is running some kind of caching software (Varnish or the like).

Why you need a dedicated server for this is beyond me. I'm also fairly certain they're not using a CDN and calling it a cache...

                ACK!

If you're running Varnish then the images are still stored on the server. Implicit in the idea of a cache is a primary store behind the cache.

Varnish sits between the HTTP server and the client. The HTTP server may or may not be on the same physical server.

It stores all of its data in a giant RAMDisk. They could very well configure Varnish such that it doesn't sit between the HTTP server & the client, but it's a separate instance with most static content. Again, this would not at all surprise me given the technical abilities of the staff here.
