  • The Man Who Saved the World

When an alarm announced that the United States had launched missiles at the Soviet Union, Stanislav Petrov could have pushed the red button to start a full-scale nuclear war. Luckily for all of us, he didn't.

the dude came close to launching a retaliatory nuclear strike in '83 shortly after the Russians shot down a US airliner. Sunlight messed with their satellite and triggered their warning system and the guy...

    did nothing

I'm glad it was him and not me. What a hellish decision to make. And then get forced into retirement for what was a "good call".
The suggestion, in the article, that he be given a Nobel Prize seems like a good idea.
He certainly deserves it more than a number of past recipients (eg. Mugabe & Mandela. Obama did nothing to get his prize)

Just goes to show that MAD doesn't work. Whoever strikes first wins.

With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

No problem. He did a good job. As a programmer I know that programs usually are right - their main problem is that it's humans that write them.

I fully agree that he is a obvious Peace Price nominee.
