Excuse me, Boris, if you would kindly go back to your opera thread, you would see me defending opera among these 'philistine brutes':

That point just before the famous climax... when the female voices sing softly off in the distance... and then... Dilegua, O notte! then the great "Vincero!" WOW.

So if I ask you if you have listened to Yeltzin Garbachova's masterpiece, you know WTF I'm talking about?

I knew it. I called it. I knew someone would come in here and say something about free lunches.

As for you, Asher, I never did claim I knew much about opera. I know next to nothing but my next to nothing is more than an average person would know.

Although you would be surprised. You are more familiar with some operatic pieces than you think. Take the Habanera from Carmen:

There is such a word as "perestroika". It means restructuring and was one of Mikhail Gorbachov's policies (along with "glasnost" meaning openness). Yeltsin came on to the scene at about that time.
He didn't make that word up.

Yeah, that's the one piece of opera that everyone has heard. That one piece is all the opera 90% of the human race will ever hear. Oh, and they'll also think "Carmina Burana" is an opera.
