So I want to hear the reasons for prohibiting nuclear power plants. I have never seen a legitimate and good reason to be opposed to the construction of new plants. They all revolve around fear-mongering Chernobyl stuff, which said more about the Soviet Union than about the dangers of nuclear power. The thing about Three Mile Island was that nothing happened. Safety systems were in place and they successfully prevented a catastrophe. Three Mile Island should be held as an example of why nuclear power is so safe and why new plants that can take advantage of the latest safety technology should be built to replace the old plants which carry a bit more risk than newer systems.

Its not as simple as that. Being in the nuclear power industry, I can state that the TMI accident was not a nothing happened issue. While true 2 of the three radiation boundaries maintained their integrity, the fuel did melt down. 22 tons of it (fuel assemblies etc) was eventually found in the bottom half of the reactor. It was fortuitous and dumb luck that the recirc water in the reactor was able to channel its way through the molten mess and allow a semblance of reactor cooling and thus preventing the accident from breaching the reactor confines.

Many many things were wrong about the TMI situation, the industry has become much much safer as a result of the lessons learned. But complacency was probably the largest culprit. A feeling that the design was so robust that nothing could cause a large scale accident. (A "Titanic" attitude if you will). The industry can not afford any large scale incident again else it will be the death knell of nuclear power. You realize of course that the comission that investigated TMI accident was one vote away from shutting down all nuclear power in the US at the time. Complacency is not allowed and can not be allowed given the political climate.

Don't get me wrong. I am a most vocal proponent of nuclear power, it does provide the cheapest base load power available and if you are into that whole "CO2 is destroying the world stuff", virtually CO2 emission free (save stand by diesel generators for emergency power for reactor shut down in the event of station blackout conditions).

That being said there are a number of issues that no one has tackled here inthe US that should be addressed. New nuclear designs with greater reliability since the designs of the 60's and 70's. Use of Yucca Mountain and moreover a lifting of the prohibition of spent fuel recycling come to mind as well.

As for the issue of simply shutting down what is in existence that's plainly absurd. There is no alternative for the base load generation of 25% of the nations power at the moment. Further, the track record is fairly good, that being said the level of regulation (I can't beleive I am saying this being an avid proponent of deregulation in most cases) is appropriate and should be maintained.
