  • My brilliant idea

Instead of deifying dead presidents, why doesn't the US auction off the rights to place advertisements on its currency (for a set number of bills of a given suite of denominations in a given year, say)?

McDonald's could advertise on the dollar bill (come into McDonald's and trade this for one of the 8 delicious items on our dollar value menu). The hundred could advertise Cristal and BMWs...

The advertising price would be too high in order for it to be worth it to the government. Nobody would be able to afford it.

Er...why? How much do you really think it costs to create a set of dies?

It's been a while since I've seen the film but iirc, the money advertised Carl's Jr. using a holographic image with a soundbite.

I think he's saying that advertising budgets for many corporations, as significant as they are, might just be chump change for the government and that this is the same government that spends hundreds of dollars on individual pens and so would probably spend an unnecessary crapload getting this implemented.

                  I blame the forum layout.

So you don't think that the government can get dies engraved for less than, say, a billion dollars a year?

God forbid I assign any competence at all to the US federal gov't, but I think that they could manage a simple operation like this.

Indeed. if a country is to sell its dignity it would want a very high price.

Imagine a $50 note with an ad from a brothel, "Legal tender in the United States, redeemable for one blow job at the Pink ***** Massage Parlour".

Personally I would prefer not having my currency turned into a billboard, even if it means the tax burden increases by a few dollars per person per year. Aside from aesthetic preferences, it would make us look desperate.

The "currency" I use most already has the name of financial institutions all over it. I don't see it as undignified....

By the way, if we assume a billion dollars a year net to the federal government from this, and that it would be rebated as a flat percentage of the federal income taxes paid, it would represent ~100$ a year to my family.

Handling money with some pictures of children enjoying Coke on it seems worth it to me...

Umh. Cards (credit or debit) are not "coin of the realm".
