even when you have a uniform, there's still competition over other stuff. i remember at my school in somerset there was a big thing about having a 'cool' bag, if it wasn't that it would be pencil cases or something else i'm sure...

Whatever the message, I loved the animation of that video.

I agree on the main points with the presenter, but "how do you fix this"? That is a trillion $ question... as education is ultimately guided by the environment we are in, ie the end of the video... the current status quo suits our "environment" and it is hard to see anything changing the paradigm for the masses, unless you have lost of $$$ to spend on education of you children, than you can try it out yourself, by picking up "best" institutions who may have a different way of functioning than the mainstream... still the mainstream is stuck.

Not to mention the whole topic of drugging kids with ADHD in the US - that one is frightening, and really a WTF!!! moment... business + incapable parents = $$$ for on kids medication. but a different topic altogether.

IMO, if they kept up the "standard" model, plus have the kids start education at 7 and do ~4hrs school and one hour play/sports in the meantime, that would work wanders to the existing system, in the terms of kid development, costs and efficiency (for sure they would learn at least the same, as they do now) except that there is no place to put all those kids once they are out of school, while the parents are working.

Consequences of the larger system, thus no hope on the horison, too many involved parties are interested in the status quo. During the enlightenment it was the business who pushed for the "revolution", and there is no way that anything other than "tweaking" the current system can be done right now... I cannot see where could the energy come from to turn this whole thing upside down, and end up with as good as, or better results. (my point above, is a "tweak", but also one almost impossible to implement in the west).

Having a rich and strong state is a prerequisite to get the public education moving in the right direction, and consequently there are only a handful of countries capable of executing it. I can only think of Scandinavian countries actually, who have one of the best public educations systems in the world as it is anyhow.
