The trick is to get a PhD and then get out of academia as quickly as you can.

I think I'll just stick to being a mad scientist, running experiments out of the basement of my mansion that I bought with the huge amounts of money I made in IT Security. I'll set up shop in California where I'll have a large homeless population to harvest for test subjects.

Americans have some of the best agricultural lands in the world, along with Ukraine and Argentina, American farmers don't need help from the State to be competitive and make a lot of money, Australians have much worse land than the USA, and their farmers make enough money to have a very good standard of life in an expensive first world country.

Farm subsidies in the USA mean free money for people who don't or shouldn't lose money.

There is one, and only one reason they still exist: Iowa has the first caucus in the presidential primary season, and thus is disproportionately important in presidential politics.

Pretty much everyone else hates farm subsidies.

The war in Iraq was flagrantly unnecessary, and the war in Afghanistan failed its stated objective and is now dragging on for ages and accomplishing nothing. Whom are we going to go to war with?
More than just going to war we also have to project force to defend our trade routes and overseas interests.

Remember, some of our subsidies are for our farmers to not grow food.

Is Iowa really the only state that benefits from farm subsidies?

No, but it's the only one that is really really important in national politics.

I should amend my post to "everyone who's not a farmer hates farm subsidies" which is what, 97% of the population?

The whole caucus system is retarded to me. I don't get why they don't just do it in the important states like California, Texas, Florida, New York, and Pennsylvania. Why bother with the hick states?

                    Still, the senators add up.

True, but I think the senate could kill it if they wanted to, it would just end any hopes any senator who voted for it could ever have of becoming president.

****ing Iowa. It's not even representative of this country.

I wonder if Iowa being white-bread land has anything to do with it.

Well, I guess I'll still pursue biochemistry, but as a hobby. I need to find some things to give me long term goals.

What do you mean by "biochemistry as a hobby"? Reading books about it?

Yes. There's tons of books out there these days and there's nothing stopping me from buying textbooks. The reality is that I wanted the PhD as a long term goal and to make my studies official, not because I wanted to sit there and listen to an instructor. It's far faster to learn it on your own than to be tied down to a system as inefficient as the academic system. The only time I could see it worthwhile to have an instructor is to ask questions when needed and if they have information that goes beyond the book. Otherwise, what good are they?
