rowan williams should tell this backwards lot to shove it. the same with those opposing gay bishops. he should tell the pope where he can stick his ministry as well. then make an appeal to disaffected catholics who would prefer more worship of God and less abusing of children to come over to the church of england.

The sad thing is that the issue that was being considered at the time these guys threatened to secede was the ordination of women bishops. In order to prevent a split the Anglican council voted down the measure, yet these guys still walked after they got their way.

I don't know why I am answering, but for Christians who believe in Apostolic succession and that the bread and wine really become the flesh and blood of Jesus, male priesthood is an important issue, because it is not clear that women could be consacrated as priests, or that women could consacrate the bread and wine.

After all Jesus was a male, and all the apostles he chose were male too. They are no relativists, they think truth exists and does not change, and are trying to be consistent with their beliefs. Props to them.

Mary Magedeline was an important person to Jesus, although she was not officially an apostle. But she may have had an important role nevertheless.

Just because the Catholic church over emphasized Mary (the mother) doesn't mean that other Christians should over emphasize Mary (Magedeline). Christ chose 12 apostles, all men because at that time men were the ones who could own property/travel/etc easily.

they were considered to be inferior to men, and under the authority of men -- either their father before marriage, or their husband afterwards.

Why would He make a woman an apostle when they would have difficulty reaching people because of their sex? Women were significant in the church, as described by Paul (who was a bit sexist) and others in the Bible.

Note that modern Christians (and I think Christians for quite some time) read the story in Matthew 15 completely different than modern atheists (obviously atheists interpret it in a fashion to attack Christ).

The ancient church did have deaconesses, supposedly--largely because, in those days, even adult baptisms were done in the nude. There are some people within my church who think we should revive the institution, but it's pretty well on the back burner until unification is accomplished.
