  • UK housing/unemployment squeeze

    from the Torygraph

property market in a double dip...
Nida Ali, an economic adviser to Ernst & Young ITEM Club, said: “The UK housing market is indeed in the midst of a double-dip.

“Housing demand continues to be depressed while those willing to buy a house will have difficulty in financing their purchase.”

"This coupled with the fact that an increasing number of people are putting their properties on the market is exerting a downward pressure on prices.

"Moreover, recent trends suggest that the state of the wider economy- particularly the labour market- is likely to remain unsupportive in the months ahead. Thus house prices will continue falling during the rest of the year and into 2011."

and a neat little article about CIPD unemployment estimate

It estimates that the combined direct and indirect effect of public spending cuts will lead to 650,000 private sector job losses, while the impact of VAT rising from 17.5pc to 20pc will undermine profits to claim a further 250,000 jobs.

Furthermore, the 490,000 losses forecast for the public sector appears to be an underestimate "given what most public sector managers are telling the CIPD" and excludes about 50,000 cuts likely to fall in the current financial year and 120,000 in 2015-16, the organisation said.

Dr John Philpott, the CIPD's chief economic adviser, said: "The question 'Where will the new jobs come from?' is bound to be asked for quite some time yet.

while noone seems to be counting all admin/remote type jobs which continue their move to the east to add to the pile up... interesting times

your tidy profit should be buying you more and more, longer you wait ... given the outlook...

For me too...I have been accumulating a lot of money for a deposit and I am just waiting for the time to strike. I'm quite lucky, my income has gone up quite dramatically over this recession period with no lack of work...very nice. Although next year is looking a little more uncertain...

This economic climate does make me worry about prospects in the UK. Effectively, I've not worked in my own country for nearly 2 years (although I am still based in it) and this project shortly ends and I'm not looking forward to what awaits (although I have a feeling I will be grabbed for one of the Swiss/German projects so probably more travelling until things improve, but I am used to this now).

On the other hand I am not looking forward to being back for other reasons...I've got used to working in Latin work environments and I like them, laid back, friendly...when I was back in the UK working locally for a very short period of time I really, really did not get on with the people...and this is not the first time this has happened to me with the British...

Am I destined to emigrate or something?

no you are just normal, and British working environments are often not

That environment was something else...really unpleasant. Funnily enough, both of the times I have had this problem with British work environments is with the same company, two different sites! However I have worked for the same company all over the world and they've been fantastic.

And I found the workforce in this company in the UK to be less well motivated and less diligent...well organised but relatively lazy...

Be carefuly you don't judge the whole UK working environment from the example of one company.
