Bored of democracy

Election day is coming, but I really can't bring myself to care. I'm aware, intellectually, that democracy is vastly preferable to the umpteen other, even crummier forms of government humanity has tried, but still...blecch. I don't care if they waste money we don't have on guns or on butter. I guess butter's better, as I might get a chunk of that without having to join the military, but it's all waste so screw it.

My vote, if I could be troubled to drag myself to the polls and make an informed decision, would be immediately canceled out by somebody else's, and in the grand scheme of things my part is so small that it doesn't seem worth the gas mileage. Informed decision sounds like a hassle too, and my opinion doesn't align with either party's very well. I briefly considered looking up which local candidates are endorsed by the "tea party" and simply voting against them for spite, but then it might be equally fun to just watch the morons get in office and realize they promised the impossible. If anything, I'd want to vote for whoever would be the minority, just to keep the majority from accomplishing something and wasting still more money.

Does anybody feel like talking me out of it? Or linking to a vaguely related gag?

the new type of government that should be tried is direct democratic governance.

For each issue that more than 10% of the overall voters request, it goes to a web based referendum, where all the voters are eligible, and the majority decides. Would be an interesting experiment.

No, that's what people turned to when they got sick of democracy in the past. I'm thinking we need a form of government run by small, unhappy, neurotic people who never see daylight by their own choice. Preferably retired civil engineers who don't even want the job.

Don't think it would work. Even if you overcame fraud concerns, you'd probably wind up with the same mess as California. To my way of thinking, the good thing about democracy is not that it gives "power to the people." That's its main weakness--assuming it works exactly as intended, democracy gives power to those of precisely average intelligence. Not good. No, what's good about democracy isn't that it gives power but that it dilutes it to such an extent that it can't be catastrophically abused. Unless the system fails.

We have plenty of uninformed idiots voting as it is, douchenozzle. They want to keep all the services they currently get, to not have to pay for them with higher taxes, and to stop running up the deficit. They think they'll achieve it by trimming "waste." So the real problem is not that they're uninformed, but that they are stupid.
