I live in a city where geology is massive (due to oil & gas), and they don't start anywhere NEAR $85K with just a bachelors.
We have a guy with just two years experience who is making over $80k with over time. The funny thing is he's salary but certain government contracts require prevailing wage to be paid so if you get put on one of those even if you're salary your compensation gets changed to at least union rates. Also, around here any way, petroleum geologists get paid more then environmental geologists or even engineering geologists so he's not doing bad for a lowly environmental geologist with only 2 years experience. I on the other hand end up doing paper work but still getting prevailing wage since much of the work is billed on that DoD contract. I originally went in to geology because I liked working outdoors but the higher you go the more time you spend behind a desk.
