I wouldn't tell the time of day to a Welshie, so I voted yes.

I gather from this that they don't install toilets?

If it was someone from Poly, I would tell them the time. Otherwise, no. That's because I don't own a watch, and wouldn't want to mislead a productive member of society into being late for something important.

The reason Americans find a concern with Gypsies laughable and archaic is because they don't live with them.

The ones that do make it to America are mostly likeable decent ones anyway (I should stress there are some like that in Slovenia a example of this would be http://sl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oto_Pestner) and they mostly seem to come from Western European countries where the native ones seem pretty ok when viewed from afar.

Gypsies are glamorized in America for their erotic dancing and ability to see into the future.

I would never turn my back on a Zealander. But giving the time to a single person in broad daylight? Maybe I'm naive but I'd render that favor to almost anybody.

One place where I believe in discrimination is selling/buying stuff over the internet. Staying well clear of anybody with a poor command of language for example. There are other red flags but that's an easy one. It's not ethnicity, Percy, but can come close.

Depends on where I am. If I'm walking in central downtown Portland or Midtown Manhattan, I generally won't be suspicious of anyone who stops me to ask something. If I were in east Gresham or the Lower East Side, I'd be hesitant to stop for anyone, no matter what they looked like.

I do remember one time being stopped by someone when I was coming out of Penn Station after a long train ride from Maryland. He tapped me on the shoulder as I stood waiting to cross 7th avenue, and I jumped in surprise, just because you don't expect anyone to be tapping you on the shoulder at such a point. He then said, in a tone that was more accusatory than joking, "Hey, no need to jump just because a black man is next to you, I'm not going to ROB you or anything!"--never mind that I hadn't even seen who had tapped me when I was startled. He then proceeded to ask for money. My guess is he mistakenly thought he could play on some sense of White guilt in me. Not a good way to ingratiate yourself if you're panhandling, *******...

Thanks for sharing that anecdote, Boris. Those who claim they would never treat someone differently based on their ethnicity are fooling themselves. The bum in your story certainly didn't come up with the idea of white guilt on his own - he experienced it for himself, and knows that some whites are more likely to give him money simply because he's black.
