I remember from my days at various investment banks that it was a standard practice to single out the young and gullible and ply them with empty platitudes to get them to work all hours. IIRC GS is one of the more 'hard working' banks and peer pressure is such that it is difficult to leave work at anything resembling a decent time (I always felt guilty being the first to leave of an evening at CSFB when it was kind of busy before 9pm) - but hey, that's what the bonus is for, eh?
