Exactly, so that means that dental insurance is nothing more than a tax dodge.

Partly. But people have been known to be, in my mind, overly risk-averse (and, indeed, risk-averse in very odd ways)12-17-10 Mohamed Bouazizi NEVER FORGET

Are you all high? Do you know how much a root canal costs? When I was uninsured, I had to get it done (along with some fillings) and it cost me almost $4000! God I wish I had dental insurance when I needed it!
Had to pay $4000 in cashThat's like a used car just for some dental work!
And to think I could have been paying a buck a week for dental insurance
Explain KH... I'm calling complete bull**** on that comment. And HC is a 17 year old boy who doesn't know jack.Last edited by Al B. Sure!; September 21, 2010, 21:24."Flutie was better than Kelly, Elway, Esiason and Cunningham." - Ben Kenobi

Albert, insurance only makes sense when the cost of the risk would be ruinous. Otherwise you're just paying extra money for no reason, unless there's a tax advantage.
Over the course of your ownership of, say, a house, you will pay more into insurance than the cost of the house (assuming it isn't destroyed or you move out or change providers etc). But if at any point the house is destroyed, you won't be able to pay for it. You offset this risk with insurance, even though over the long term it's more expensive, because if it is destroyed and you don't have insurance there is no long term.If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

a) No non-subsidized dental insurance costs a dollar a week, you twit
b) A root canal doesn't cost 4000$. I had one, and it cost 1100$ including both my contribution as well as the insurance's
c) AFAIK, most dental plans crap out after 1500$ of coverage in a year

You saying that paying $4000 in cash didn't affect me? You're saying that I should not have leaped whole heatedly into paying a buck a week or whatever pittance dental insurance costs to offset those relatively significant costs associated with my dental work?"Flutie was better than Kelly, Elway, Esiason and Cunningham." - Ben Kenobi

Albie, are you ****ing high, you ****ing idiot? How the **** is any insurance company going to make money charging 50$ a year so that they can pay 4000$ of benefits for a procedure which isn't particularly rare?
It's **** like this which makes it obvious why you couldn't get a job in finance.12-17-10 Mohamed Bouazizi NEVER FORGET

Jesus ****ing Christ, albie.
b) A root canal, crown, and 6 fillings cost me just under $4000. Where you get yours done? Canada?
c) Regardless, any bit helps.
Consider these plans from Aetna:

$30/month or $360/year to cover up to $1200 worth of work... umm... yeah... if you know you are going to need dental work done, why the **** would you not leap at that?"Flutie was better than Kelly, Elway, Esiason and Cunningham." - Ben Kenobi

Here I have something very simple for you... In my situation, would I have been better or worse off if I had dental insurance?"Flutie was better than Kelly, Elway, Esiason and Cunningham." - Ben Kenobi
