We've been trying to fix the damn place for 7 years now. Going in was a mistake; staying as long as we did was another. Stationing over a hundred thousand soldiers in Iraq is an expenditure well out of proportion to the benefits to us OR the Iraqis.

Now if only we could get out of Afghanistan, too

No, the problem was getting Iraqi personnel to come out of hiding.

Were there any 'leaving forever' messages?

Though that raises a provocative question: why are we still in Japan, Germany, and Korea? Why are we still structured to fight the Cold War? Will our defense spending ever return to levels comparable to those of pre-WWII?

Unlikely in the medium term. But never say never...
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. No, because after WWII we realized we had to stay prepared. It took us a long time to build up enough forces to fight world war II when we finally decided to get involved.

No, dufus, we kept up our forces after WW2 because of the Soviet Union, and in the intervening time until its collapse the massive standing army became an institution more pernicious than Medicare or whichever social program you hate the most.

No, it doesn't work like that.

                            Also, unoriginal troll

My viewpoint on defense spending is entirely consistent with my viewpoint on general public spending, since the military is a public good.

I just appreciate the irony of "fiscal conservatives" defending a bloated military budget.

I didn't say it shouldn't be reduced, just not to pre-WWII comparable levels.

Having airbases in Japan, Germany, etc is INCREDIBLY USEFUL. My understanding is we get our money's worth from being able to launch bombers from there.
