We've been trying to fix the damn place for 7 years now. Going in was a mistake; staying as long as we did was another. Stationing over a hundred thousand soldiers in Iraq is an expenditure well out of proportion to the benefits to us OR the Iraqis.
Now if only we could get out of Afghanistan, too

No, the problem was getting Iraqi personnel to come out of hiding.Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.

Though that raises a provocative question: why are we still in Japan, Germany, and Korea? Why are we still structured to fight the Cold War? Will our defense spending ever return to levels comparable to those of pre-WWII?"My nation is the world, and my religion is to do good." --Thomas Paine

Unlikely in the medium term. But never say never...Will our defense spending ever return to levels comparable to those of pre-WWII?I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

No, because after WWII we realized we had to stay prepared. It took us a long time to build up enough forces to fight world war II when we finally decided to get involved.Originally posted by Guynemer View PostThough that raises a provocative question: why are we still in Japan, Germany, and Korea? I didn't say it shouldn't be reduced, just not to pre-WWII comparable levels.
Having airbases in Japan, Germany, etc is INCREDIBLY USEFUL. My understanding is we get our money's worth from being able to launch bombers from there. If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

No, it doesn't work like that.
