wider is better, who uses a 1024 screen these days, are we counting on third world readership to prop the site?
let us select the background, or just a white or even better black screen at the back... please...
black + orange is not too bad, as I used to have yellow + black for as long as that was possible - still my fav style.

As far as changes go this one gets a 5 on 1-10 scale... or 4.5 not catastrophic but not good either... if you could select the background it would be a 6.

edit: flexible width, no background fixes it - so 6 it is
edit II: make it 7.5/10 I like it.
