Sports Illustrated says basketball player Willis Reed had the #1 playing with pain moment:

"I have nothing against Wilson, but he's nowhere near the same calibre of QB as Flutie. Flutie threw for 5k+ yards in the CFL." -Ben Kenobi

Chris Simms played an entire game with a ruptured spleen.

Sports Illustrated is, and always has been, NFL/NBA/MLB biased due to their target market (eg, not Canada).

        That list is ****ing ridiculous.

And incase you missed my DanS:
        Look, here are facts:

        1) Hockey players wear less protective gear than football players
        2) Hockey players move at higher rates of speed on the ice than football players do on the turf
        3) A hockey puck to the body will cause far more damage than a football to the body given that:
3a) it is far more dense than a football
3b) it is shot at far higher rates of speed (90-105mph)
3c) hockey players routinely intentionally drop infront of a shot to block it with their body

Given all of the above, it is patently clear hockey players are tougher and more badass than pansy football players.

****, even the goalies didn't start wearing masks til the 1970s. Players didn't start wearing helmets til the league forced them, for liability reasons.

There's no question hockey players are the most badass.

Asher, the protective gear actually increases the force exerted on the hits... We discussed this in the soccer sucks thread when someone said Rugby players were tougher than football players because Rugby players don't have padding.

Sports Science took a look at it and found that football players generate several times as much force as Rugby players when they hit because, 1) they're tougher and better athletes than Rugby players and 2) there's an element of fearlessness when you're padded up so you throw your entire body into someone in a manner that would be too reckless in Rugby to attempt.

So yeah, more padding actually makes NFL players tougher... they hit harder.

There's enough NFL players who have been paralyzed to show that the padding doesn't mean much.

You act like football players didn't used to just wear this for decades... the plastic helmet was mandated by the NFL and many players at the time hated it.
