It wasn't on my screen. I even Ctrl-F'd and searched for cerebral and only HC's post came up.
And excuse me? How do you know I don't have a poster of John Shuster on my wall? How do you know I don't own a "What would Shuster do?" t-shirt?
1) Because the guy is from Minnesota, and you are from Philly
2) Because you are from Philly
3) Because you like rap music and live in Philly

My first exposure to football was having to play it in gym in 5th grade in California. It was the most perplexing sport I'd ever seen -- you spend 99% of the time standing around doing nothing, then most of the people just run towards each other and cancel each other out. My understanding of the sport has progressed since then, but it's still ****ing boring and retarded.
Whatever. You can claim it is boring, but don't claim it isn't cerebral. NO sport is anywhere near as cerebral as football. Have you ever seen a football playbook?

Yes. The fact that you have a ****ing playbook means it's not cerebral. You have predefined plays that've been around for ****ing years, and you just execute them. The coach picks one, and you go with it.
Dynamic sports like hockey force decisions to be made on a real-time basis from absolutely everyone. There's high level plays that correspond to the playbook in football, but there's far more room for decision making by everyone else -- making the sport more cerebral than the "do what the playbook tells you" **** in football.
Did you know McDonalds employees get a booklet describing how to do every aspect of their job? Would you call working for McDonalds to be cerebral?

Dumb dumb dumb...
ever heard of pre-snap adjustments? What do you think Peyton Manning is doing when he's saying a million different things and moving his arms around? The play may be changed, Blocking assignments are changed, receivers have their routes changed, receivers go into motion...
or on defence, the middle linebacker and the safety are making adjustments. You'll rarely see a defense stay in the exact same formation that they line up in by the time the ball is snapped. There's a million variables they need to account for on the fly.

This post is full of fail.
Football is not as cerebral as you think it is. Both football and hockey are similar in key aspects: both sports involve lines of players, and the team in possession needs to get past the team defending. 99% of the **** that you think is cerebral for football is the same in hockey -- pre-snap adjustments correspond to pre-puck drop adjustments, the set play may be changed as the centre notices the defenders positions, defensive assignments may be changed, wingers have their routes changed, wingers go into motion, etc.
The only difference? In football, you have the luxury of repeatedly getting peace and quiet and time and space to make the call of what you want to do next. In hockey, the vast majority of the time these calls are made dynamically by players as the game unfolds -- all at speeds far in excess of what NFL players need to deal with. And the individual plays the players make need to fall within an overall system (or high-level strategy) adapted by the coaching staff.
When you have players who are mentally far beyond their contemporaries in the sport, like Wayne Gretzky, you can absolutely dominate the game. The game is so cerebral, and Gretzky was able to be a couple steps ahead of everyone else and know exactly where to go and when to shoot. Football has never had somebody as individually great as Gretzky was, and this is partly because the sport is not as cerebral -- there's not enough ROOM in the sport for such men to stand tall far above the rest. Instead, the sport relies upon speed or accuracy only -- physical attributes, not mental.
And if you look at the statistics, Gretzky didn't have an abnormally high shooting percentage (shooting accuracy) and was not particularly fast. What set him apart was his mind. His cerebral play.

Let's take an example... a defense is in a 4-3 cover 2 zone with man-to-man on the outside receivers and a linebacker overload on the weak-side. The offense comes in with a singleback, two tight-end set with two outside receivers. The QB sees the linebacker overload and has a variety of choices. The blocking assignments can change if he and/or the center feel the blitz will come from the overload. He can motion a tight-end to that side to provide additional pass protection but that's only one option. He can also motion a tight-end to the slot adjacent to the strongside where there is less linebacker presence and have the tight end run an outside slant route, hoping the corner on that side is in man-to-man or an inside curl route before the linebackers can react.
Meanwhile, the defense needs to react to the changes made by the QB. And all this has to happen in oh about 20 seconds...
Not cerebral my ass

Those breaks that you seem to think detract from the cerebral-ness actually enhance it because it means that plays can be of increasingly greater complexity because of the 45 second break. Hockey is like basketball. There's plays but the real-time nature of the sport limits the complexity of the plays.

The fact that hockey players put far more effort and heart into the play, sacrificing their bodies regularly to win a game, is just another reason why it is by far a superior sport to football.

And then what about the real-time aspect of football? What do you think is going on in that 6 seconds or so that the average NFL play lasts? Players are moving all over the field... the X receiver was bumped by the CB slowing his route... the safety playing close to the line back-pedaled into a zone... the SAM linebacker rips around the offensive line... the QB has to check to see where his first read is, he's bumped and is being defended tight... second read... slant across the middle but the MIKE backer is there in a QB spy... third... does he have time? the SAM linebacker is barreling towards him... quick!

The fact that you've got so much time you can do more "complex" things like run in retarded patterns does not make it more cerebral.
The fact that the decisions need to be made faster in a dynamic situation -- not static -- makes hockey more cerebral.
How the **** can you call football cerebral when 90% of the players on the field probably have an IQ in the 60s?

And then what about the real-time aspect of football?
Yes, all what...14 minutes of real-time play the players play per week? That must be mentally excruciating.
