Obviously, I do not agree with such policies. Inasmuch as those policies increased the protestant population in Northern Ireland, they were also short-sighted.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

What part of those countries did the Brits retain as a possession?

That said, I do have my criticisms of the Brits in those areas, but on different grounds.

Northern Ireland can go back to Ireland proper once Taiwan is reunited with China proper.

That won't be long, so I have no problem with agreeing to that.

Neither would seem to be what the majority in either place wants, though.

I think you may have missed the point. No doubt in those other situations, British interests were consulted as the Brits withdrew, but in Northern Ireland, the Brits did not withdraw.

The point I was alluding to was that the political solution of "unite Ireland" is hopelessly naive, even though I happen to agree that it would be a great solution. Just as simple political solutions elsewhere don't work.

It's not hopelessly naive. It just takes a lot of time to accomplish. I'm patient. It makes sense for the Republicans in Northern Ireland to accommodate the Brits until the Brits can be thrown out.

Use your imagination a little, Boris. There will come a time when China becomes more appealing for Taiwan to join. Ireland has come a long way, and there may be continued demographic shifts on Northern Ireland.

Yeah, I'm not saying that won't happen. But it might not happen, and the people in each places may always wish to maintain the status quo as it is today (or in Taiwan's case, seek recognized independence). Should that be the case, will you "look forward" to it? If not, why not? Does the outcome of democratic referenda only matter if it's an outcome which you approve?

Me, I'm happy with self-determination in either case. If the Northern Irish are content with continuing to be a part of the U.K., then they have my blessing. I certainly don't see the logic of saying the British have "no business" being in N. Ireland when it seems that it's what the people there want.
