Before you go spouting off about israel's backwardness, consider that people get their names stuck on a list that prevents them from owning a house or getting a job for the rest of their lives for having sex with 17 year olds here.

This is not a defense of israel's law. My point is that **** is ****ed up everywhere.

Those lists are generally understood to be broken by many, if not most, people who know how they work out IRL. The Economist actually did a cover story on them a couple months ago, and if a thread were started about them I'd be on the opposing side. Actually, maybe I'll do that.

1. For legal purposes yes, yes they are recognised just as any other marriage is. My parents were married in a civil Soviet marriage and their marriage was recognised (for example).

2. Misrepresentations as to the identity of a person constitutes, under Australian law, an offence if such misrepresentations procure an act of sexual intercourse. E.g--"We're married [actually not married] so let's do it" is a crime in Australia and came up once because the wife was a Greek immigrant who spoke no English afaik.

I wouldn't be surprised if similar laws existed in the US.

That said I think such laws are ridiculous.
Keep in mind Israeli criminal law is for the most part a holdover of English colonial law.

The law questionably includes "lying or creating a false image to induce consent" as a form of rape.

A previous advocate general said the "false pretense" clause should be enacted when "a common person may expect that the woman would not give concent if she had known some information to be false".

There were already 2 precedents by the court:
A (jewish) person who pretended to be a senior figure in the housing ministry who promised his lover an apartment and an increased pension through his wife's work.
A (jewish) person who pretended to be a rich brain surgeon promising loads of gifts and free medical care to his loved one.

The ***** that pressed charges relied less on the fact he's an arab but more on the fact he falsely claimed he was single and was interested in possibly setting up a family with her, while he was in fact married.

This is of course very odd since by his account, they went to **** something like 15 minutes after first meeting. This makes her claims she was somehow enchanted by a supposed possibility of marrying him a bit dubious.

This case is just ludicrous on all accounts. It has raised a lot of eyebrows in the legal community and is heavily criticized in the media.

The guy said he had recently got calls from lawyers offering free legal services.

This is a stupid suggestion. The religious marriage crap hurts far more non Palestinian non-religious Israelis than it does Arab-Jewish couples. There's a steadily growing group of non-religious Israelis who push for a civilian marriage authority.

Its a dumb question of separation of church and state, which hasn't been solved so far because of the unusual weight of religious parties in the Israeli coalition government system, which pretty much gives small parties veto abilities over anything they don't like.

1) Azazel never supported this. He just stated the facts to set the discussion straight.

2) What government decisions are you talking about? This is a court ruling.

Every man I know (and most women) think this case is ludicrous. We have an ever growing amount of ludicrous court decisions, in both directions (left and right).

3) What gives you the notion I automatically support Israeli government decisions? I hate most of their decisions and despise most of the people making up this government (or the opposition).
