  • Would it be a good idea to cut Belgium in half?

What's the geography? Would each have sea coast? And would one or both halves combine with their linguistic neighbors? Would think it would be easier for the Walloons as they have both linguistics and religion in common with France and get a seacoast that way. Maybe the phlems go it alone?

Is Brussels not within the Flemish part of the country, but has large French speaking parts?

Flemish to the Dutch, Walloons to the French.

What Walloons and French share is culture. As someone puts it: there is no walloon culture, 'walloon culture' is a part of french culture.
Religion is irrelevant. I don't know why you bring up that 19th century concept.
The closest thing to religion that Walloons may have in common with French is unhealthy fascination for socialism (33% last elections).
If you mean traditional religion like Catholicism and protestantism, then, well, Walloons share the same traditional, historical catholic past with Flemings and french.

Now, don't mix up culture and nationality. Walloons are not French. While we share culture, we do not share history.

@ the OP, seems like it's going to happen, sooner or later.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Belgium is one of my favourite countries to visit - I happen to like it exactly how it is thanks!
Is it me, or is MOBIUS a horrible person?

There you have it. Belgium needs to be separated. If there was any question about it before, this cauterizes it.
