Pitiful. Ran a half-assed campaign and let the Democrats define the narrative of him as a "mean old man." Generally just gave off a vibe of being nominated because it was his turn, not because he had any shot of winning. Then shortly after the election, he started showing personality and a sense of humor that left people wondering why the hell he didn't campaign like that. At least, that's how I remember it nearly 15 years later.

Actually the RNC and his campaign told Dole to not be engaging and show personality. They specifically advised him not to try to make jokes, etc. which McCain tried to not repeat the same mistake and kind of got into hot water with some of his comments like "the beach boys song... bomb iran"

Dole, in fact, had been known as one of the funniest members of the Senate, but as McCain joined him on the trail, he noticed that Dole held back. By then Dole and his advisers were divided about whether it was a good idea, in the words of one former Dole strategist, to "let Dole be Dole."

Al Gore was also instructed to tune down personality, and considering he was fairly wooden beforehand that just made him seem like a puppet!
