  • html question

Is there a good guide somewhere on how to design webpage layout roughly to the pixel? I need to make something that looks exactly like a certain Excel spreadsheet.

If you say "that's a horrible idea", **** you.

I have only very rudimentary html skills, btw.

      Use CSS absolute positioning.

This strikes me as a terrible idea in general, by the way.

If you need to make it look like excel and pixel to pixel sized, and have rudimentary HTML skillz just use a table. You could waste your life trying to lay it out with divs, and this kind of thing is exactly what tables are for.

There are probably a huge number of table tutorials out there, I don't have a recommendation for a good one.

If you have any specific questions outside that I can probably answer them. But more efficiently if you had a site for me to look at.

Tables are to be used for data, not layouts

              Absolutely

In what ways aren't excel spreadsheets giant data tables?

What if I need some big empty spots in the middle of the page for charts?

before you ask - no, I'm not reimplementing Excel in Tomcat (I'm not retarded), I'm using j-integra which appears to be ****ing awesome.

That has always astounded me. The audit and change controls that they have in place for production software but then use spreadsheets with absolutely no control at all.

Oh I really would. Seen so many vital business critical 'apps' done by someone with moderate Excel knowledge. Usually unsecured and stored on a drive that isn't backed up.
