Ok here's two recent articles that show the depths of FIFA corruption or incompetence, you choose.

The first one is about the ref for Germany v Ghana. I didn't watch that because it was at the same time as the more exciting Serbia v Australia so I don't know how he handled himself.

Scandal referee Simon in charge for Ghana showdown

A referee who has been dogged by scandal will hold Germany's World Cup fate in his hands when he takes charge of their must-win game against Ghana.

The German have already had to deal with card-happy Alberto Undiano against Serbia. The Spaniard flashed eight yellow and controversially sent off Miroslav Klose.

Now they will be worried that the Wednesday's Group D showdown could also be decided by a dodgy refereeing call!

Oh football gods, have mercy on Germany...

Carlos Simon (44) from Brazil is very controversial even in his homeland. In 2009 he was banned for six weeks because of suspected manipulation. Suspicious mistakes have piled up against the ref and there are many videos with Simon howlers on the internet.

After losing to Fluminense in 2009, President Beluzzo of Palmeiras said: "Carlos Simon obviously favours some teams. He is a shameless impostor!"

Rio de Janeiro club Flamengo also felt cheated and sent a DVD of Simon’s errors to FIFA in 2008, asking for him to be struck from the referees' panel. Simon was helped at the time by his good contacts with controversial Brazilian federation boss Teixeira – who also sits on FIFA’s Referee Commission.

Bayarn’s Brazilian defender Breno (20): "Simon is known for scandals. He is nervous at times."

Friendships with influential sports officials have brought Carlos Simon, also a journalist and former trade unionist, five Brazilian championship finals in a row – and now his third World Cup.

In 2006, he refereed Germany's 2-0 win over Sweden in the last 16. He was smiling broadly as he gave Sweden’s Teddy Lucic a harsh red card. Strange referee!

In Brazil, Simon is known as 'Sheriff' because he pulls out the cards theatrically like they were pistols...

So far in this World Cup, Simon has overseen England's 1-1 draw with the USA. His decision to let English striker Emile Heskey off without punishment for clattering into goalkeeper Tim Howard raised eyebrows with some Americans.

How is the German FA reacting to the appointment of the controversial ref?

DFB general secretary Wolfgang Niersbach told BILD: "The name isn’t familiar. I have full confidence in FIFA that the best referees are officiating at the World Cup."

But he added: "It must be said in retrospect: Why in the game against Serbia, did the referee show six yellow cards for the first six fouls?"

Hopefully Wednesday won’t be so colourful.

Next is about darling football artist David Villa escaping suspension in a situation that would have been enough for pretty much anybody else. Got to protect the stars so they can score enough beautiful goals so we can sell more Budweiser. What if it had been Izaguirre striking Villa?

Spain striker David Villa dodges FIFA action after clash with Honduras star Emilio Izaguirre

Spain striker David Villa has escaped punishment for striking Honduras defender Emilio Izaguirre on Monday night.

The new Barcelona recruit scored twice in the match to secure a 2-0 victory for the European champions but was captured on camera hitting out at Izaguirre as the pair waited for a set-piece to be taken late in the first half.
        David Villa

Japanese referee Yuichi Nishimura took no action at the time and a spokesman for FIFA said today: 'The disciplinary committee of FIFA have examined the situation and have found no grounds to open a case against David Villa.'

That leaves the star striker free to play in his team's vital third Group H match against Chile.
FIFA will not take action against Spain striker David Villa after he appeared to swipe at a Honduras player on Monday. Mexico forward Carlos Vela has recovered from injury and will be available for his country’s last-16 meeting with Argentina.

The incident (if the link lasts):

For reference, Torsten Frings (Germany) was suspended for a similar incident in the QF of the 2006 WC:
