Err....no. This is absolute nonsense. Vacation days are part of labor agreements (e.g. they were included in a rider to my offer letter). The company is legally required to give you what it promised.

Legally required? Laws mean nothing if they're not actively enforced or if the investigative department of Licencing & Inspections takes 6 months to a year to BEGIN an investigation. Get your head out of your ass with this assumption that businesses can do no wrong. I have witnessed first hand and been told to violate SEVERAL labor laws... adjusting time clock records, not paying overtime, not paying for hours worked, not reporting incidents to lower insurance liability, operating while under a closure order from the health department, interfering with a health department investigation, etc. etc.

American business is ****ed up, KH. Maybe not at Goldman Sachs but everywhere where the little guy works, it sure is.

yes, it's law here that they pay out the days not taken. they just don't and it's a major pain in the ass to squeze it out of them

They also wouldnt let me take more than 1 consecutive days off since i dont have a backup (read: I AM NOT REPLACABLE, snatch) so i decided i hated mondays and i would no longer work on them. they couldnt refute that, snatch.

Where are you working for next Asher?

I don't have anything full-time lined up. I've got some personal contracts to work on (in addition to a couple contracts for mobile apps related to the job I'm quitting, they want me to keep putting updates out for them).

I'm debating if I want to even get another full-time 9-5 job, or if I want to just become a full-time freelancer/solo consultant.

The past ~4 years I've had the only income between me and my SO, now he's got a well-paying, stable engineering job so we've still got the base stable income. I think now's a good time to play the independent market. It's not as consistent, but there's very, very good money out there.

My manager, who quit 3 months ago to join a new startup as a director, is kinda becoming disenchanted with his new job and has tabled the idea of making his own startup and was wondering if I was interested in coming on board. That's another possibility but I'm not too convinced the idea is strong enough, and he's not sure if he's going to quit his current position yet.
